Job summary

Virginia Tech National Security Institute (VTNSI) seeks an IT Systems Administrator to support research testbeds and infrastructures. The role includes deploying servers, managing Linux/Windows, and maintaining a software stack for AI/ML and cybersecurity with a hybrid in-office schedule.

The ideal candidate has containerization experience (Docker/Kubernetes), automation scripting, AD/DNS proficiency, and strong communication.

Qualifications

• Degree in a relevant area such as computer science, information technology, or significant relevant IT experience.
• Experience with containerization technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes.
• Experience using automation tools, such as Ansible, Chef, Puppet and/or other scripting, for configuration management, software deployment, and automation of routine tasks.
• Experience including installing, configuring, and maintaining common guest operating systems, including Linux and Windows, and managing user access for those systems.
• Experience with host scripting languages such as PowerShell, and Bash.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Active Directory and DNS administration and configuration.
• Excellent communication skills, including the ability to communicate to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Experience leading small teams through system administration tasks.
• US Citizenship due to the nature of the Institute's work.

Responsibilities

• Administer user access and security practices across multiple testbeds and infrastructures.
• Deploy and maintain physical and virtual servers running Linux and Windows.
• Install and maintain a software stack to support AI/ML, cybersecurity, and interdisciplinary research.
• Collaborate with stakeholders and document work clearly.
• Lead small teams on system administration tasks.
