AECOM is seeking a Senior Interior Designer for our Virginia Beach, VA office. You will lead design from concept through construction, coordinating with disciplines and mentoring junior staff.

Responsibilities

  • Lead client visioning and engagement; mentor staff for growth.
  • Lead the full design lifecycle from vision through construction documents.
  • Produce interior design and construction documents meeting codes and standards.
  • Ensure QA/QC and coordinate corrections across disciplines.
  • Communicate project information to clients, partners, and teams.
  • Review vendor documents; resolve discrepancies and coordinate updates.
  • Support proposal development with leadership and project teams.
  • Plan staffing, labor budgets, and man hours for tasks.
  • Identify scope changes; support change control processes.
  • Provide technical guidance to Designers and Technicians.
  • Report status to Interior Design Leader and escalate issues.
  • Assist with planning across disciplines and dependencies.
  • Interpret and apply industry codes and standards for compliance.

Job Description

AECOM is seeking a creative, highly talented Senior Interior Designer for immediate employment in our Virginia Beach, VA office. AECOM’s Buildings + Places business line is dedicated to design excellence and integrated project delivery solutions with expertise including architecture, interiors, engineering, development, workplace strategy, economic planning, master planning, project management, and construction services. Our B+P Roanoke studio provides industry-leading design projects in government, healthcare, and higher education markets.

Responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, those listed below:

  • Lead client visioning and engagement; provide thought leadership and design thinking; mentor and coach staff for growth.
  • Lead the full design lifecycle from visioning and programming through schematic design, design development, construction documentation, and construction administration.
  • Produce interior design and construction documents that meet applicable codes, standards, and discipline design criteria; independently develop complex drawing packages as required.
  • Ensure quality and code compliance by reviewing deliverables, coordinating corrections, and supporting QA/QC processes.
  • Communicate project information consistently and on time to clients, partners, and internal teams.
  • Review vendor and supplier documents across disciplines for accuracy; resolve discrepancies and coordinate updates.
  • Support proposal development and client pursuits in partnership with leadership and the project team.
  • Plan and monitor staffing, labor budgets, and man-hours for design tasks; track performance against plan.
  • Identify and document potential scope changes; support change control processes in alignment with project requirements.
  • Provide technical guidance to Designers and Technicians; instruct team members on standards, equipment, and material requirements.
  • Report assignment status (schedule, budget, risks) to the Interior Design Leader and elevate issues promptly.
  • Assist with planning and scheduling of design tasks and dependencies across disciplines.
  • Interpret and apply industry codes, permits, and standards to ensure design and drawing compliance.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited school in Interior Design or Architecture and 8 years of related interior design experience in commercial and government interior construction projects or demonstrated equivalency of education and/or experience.
  • Licenses, and/or certifications required: National Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ).
  • US Citizenship is required due to the nature of the projects.
  • Ability to travel domestically and/or internationally periodically.
  • Demonstrated experience coordinating with other disciplines (mechanical, electrical, telecom, fire protection).
  • Experience with space planning, building codes, and ADA requirements.
  • Experience with contract interiors FF&E (manufacturers, dealers) and experience documenting FF&E specifications.
  • Previous experience as a project designer across interior project types (e.g., workplace, healthcare, collaborative, and learning environments).
  • Demonstrated experience with building codes, standards, and building structures.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 15+ years of interior design experience on commercial and governmental interior construction projects
  • Working knowledge of Autodesk Revit and Adobe Creative Cloud (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop)
  • Experience delivering UFC-compliant Comprehensive Interior Design (CID) packages
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and collaboration skills that foster a positive team environment.
  • Proven ability to lead and mentor teams; self-starter who can manage multiple project teams on complex assignments.
  • Solid understanding of the end-to-end design process and core interior design principles and standards.
  • Demonstrated experience of cost estimating methods, materials costs, and forecasting techniques.
  • Familiarity with project change control processes, with the ability to proactively identify potential changes
  • Understanding of other disciplines’ roles and interfaces on multi-disciplinary projects.
