Job description

Ezra Lee Design+Build | Utah | Full-Time, In-Person
The Role
We're hiring a Senior Interior Designer to lead interior design on high-end custom residential projects, with occasional work on select commercial spaces, from early concept through final installation.

This person will originate strong design ideas, have the judgment to know which ideas are right for the client, architecture, budget, and space, and carry that vision through every phase of the project. You'll lead clients confidently, coordinate closely with architecture and construction, keep vendors and trades aligned, and make it easier for the entire team to execute great design.

This is a full-time, in-person role based in Utah. You'll work in the studio, on job sites, and directly with clients, architects, builders, fabricators, and trade partners. This isn't a remote design position.

What You'll Do
Originate Strong Design Direction

Develop original concepts, material palettes, interior architecture, and spatial solutions for each project rather than defaulting to trend or template.

Bring fresh thinking to recurring design challenges including flow, storage, lighting, scale, cabinetry, material transitions, and architectural detailing. Create interiors that feel specific to the client and architecture rather than assembled from a collection of good-looking selections.

Make the Call

Exercise strong design judgment across thousands of decisions involving finishes, fixtures, cabinetry, lighting, furniture, layout, proportion, materiality, and detailing.

Know when something is working, when it isn't, and what needs to change without requiring every decision to be workshopped. Balance creative ambition with client priorities, budget, constructability, and schedule.

Catch problems early, before they become expensive or difficult to correct.

Rally the Room

Lead clients, architects, builders, vendors, and trade partners around a clear design vision.

Present ideas confidently, explain the reasoning behind decisions, navigate differing opinions, and build genuine buy-in. Maintain momentum and enthusiasm around the design direction throughout long and complex projects with multiple stakeholders.

Own the Design Process

Own the interior design process for assigned projects from concept through installation.

Lead design direction, selections, documentation, specifications, coordination, procurement planning, schedules, client presentations, and final execution. Anticipate what needs to happen next and keep design decisions moving early enough to protect construction schedules and budgets.

Set Others Up to Execute

Prepare clear specifications, finish schedules, presentations, drawings, markups, and vendor direction so designers, builders, fabricators, and trades can execute without unnecessary friction.

Be the person others come to when they need the design plan clarified, not complicated.

Develop and coordinate interior architecture including:

  • Space planning
  • Cabinetry and millwork
  • Interior elevations and detailing
  • Finish materials
  • Lighting and decorative fixtures
  • Plumbing fixtures
  • Furnishings
  • Window treatments
  • Art and accessories
  • Final styling

Lead FF&E specification, budgeting, procurement coordination, installation, and final styling in collaboration with internal team members and vendors.

Develop the Team

Provide design direction, mentorship, and constructive feedback to interior designers and junior team members.

Help elevate the quality of the team's work while creating clear opportunities for others to contribute, grow, and execute successfully.

Additional Responsibilities
  • Lead client-facing design meetings and presentations
  • Develop concepts, finish palettes, material studies, and design presentations
  • Coordinate closely with architecture and construction teams to maintain design intent throughout documentation and construction
  • Source and manage relationships with vendors, fabricators, artisans, and trade partners
  • Review drawings, shop drawings, samples, mockups, and submittals for design consistency
  • Visit job sites regularly to review execution and resolve design issues
  • Maintain project design schedules and help ensure selections are made ahead of construction deadlines
  • Maintain design standards and quality across multiple concurrent residential and commercial projects
  • Participate in installation, styling, photography preparation, and project closeout
What We're Looking For
  • 7+ years of professional interior design experience, ideally with significant experience leading high-end custom residential projects
  • Experience taking projects from early concept through construction and final installation
  • A portfolio that demonstrates original thinking, strong spatial judgment, material sophistication, and cohesive execution
  • Strong understanding of interior architecture, residential construction, detailing, millwork, lighting, materials, plumbing, and finish coordination
  • Strong, fast judgment and comfort making decisive calls under ambiguity
  • The ability to balance exceptional design with budget, constructability, schedule, and client priorities
  • Confidence leading clients and presenting design ideas
  • A natural ability to bring people together around a shared direction
  • Genuine interest in helping teammates, builders, vendors, and trades do their jobs well
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to lead multiple complex projects simultaneously
  • Proficiency in Revit is required
  • Willingness to work regularly in the studio and on active job sites
  • Commercial design experience is a plus
How You Work

You naturally generate ideas, quickly discern which ideas are worth pursuing, bring people around a shared direction, and enjoy helping others execute successfully.

In Working Genius language, this role relies heavily on Invention, Discernment, Galvanizing, and Enablement. You don't need a specific Working Genius profile to succeed here, but the day-to-day work strongly rewards those abilities.

What Success Looks Like

Projects have a clear design idea from beginning to end.

Clients feel confident in the direction and understand why decisions are being made. Architects, builders, fabricators, and trade partners know exactly what they're executing. Design decisions happen early enough to protect the schedule and budget. Details remain intact throughout construction.

The design team becomes stronger because of your leadership, and when a project is complete, the result feels original, cohesive, intentional, and specific to the people who live there.

Compensation & Logistics

This is a full-time, in-person position based in Utah.

Compensation is competitive and based on experience, portfolio, and demonstrated ability to lead complex high-end residential projects.

Additional compensation, benefits, PTO, retirement, and other employment benefits will be discussed as part of the interview process.
