Job summary

UCSF Health is seeking a Senior Infrastructure Engineer to lead the planning, design, construction, and delivery of building-scale infrastructure across UCSF facilities. You will oversee low‑voltage systems, cabling, telephony, DaaS, and healthcare modality installations within renovation and new construction programs.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in CS/Engineering and 7+ years of experience in communication infrastructure or IT.
• Experience delivering large-scale network infrastructure and upgrades.
• Familiarity with industry standards (ANSI, ITA, EIA, BICSI) and building codes (NEC, NFPA).
• Experience with conduits, fiber and copper cabling; designing enterprise cabling and outside plant systems.
• Ability to read and analyze network drawings, and produce standard project documents.

Senior Infrastructure Engineer serves as a key contributor in the planning, design, construction, renovation, and delivery of infrastructure across UCSF facilities. This role oversees the build‑out, expansion, repair, and modernization of infrastructure services to support the university’s academic, medical, and research missions.

Working in close coordination with UCSF departments, project managers, design consultants, vendors, and internal ITS teams, the Senior Infrastructure Engineer provides technical direction and construction oversight for all phases of infrastructure deployment—including low‑voltage systems, copper and fiber cabling, endpoint, telephony, DaaS, and health‑care modality installations. The role ensures infrastructure components are integrated into building renovation and new construction projects in alignment with UCSF IT design standards and long‑term infrastructure strategies.

The Senior Infrastructure Engineer manages and inspects the installation, upgrade, and repair of both inside‑plant and outside‑plant communication systems, ensuring compliance with construction drawings, specifications, and code requirements. Responsibilities include coordinating field activities, reviewing as‑built documentation, conducting site walks, resolving construction conflicts, and ensuring high‑quality installation and service delivery.

Through proactive engagement and technical expertise, the Senior Infrastructure Engineer ensures UCSF’s IT infrastructure continues to evolve, scale, and perform to meet the demands of the Health, Education, Research, and Business enterprises.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate proactively to evolve, scale, and maintain UCSF’s IT infrastructure to meet health, education, research, and business enterprise demands.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree and 4 years of experience in computer science, engineering, or computer information systems.
• Seven or more years of experience in communication infrastructure, information technology, or network operations.
• Extensive experience delivering reliable and quality communication infrastructure services; proven experience supporting large‑scale network implementations and upgrades.
• Extensive experience delivering solutions based on data communication industry standards such as ANSI, ITA, EIA, and BICSI; significant experience complying with state, local, NEC, and NFPA codes and standards.
• Extensive experience with the installation and maintenance of conduits, fiber‑optic cables, and copper cables; significant experience with designing and deploying large enterprise cabling infrastructure and designing outside plant conduit and cable infrastructure systems.
• Significant experience designing the layout of horizontal cable pathways, telecom rooms, and backbone infrastructure; experience conducting budget and pricing activities for infrastructure cabling systems.
• Demonstrated ability with Word, Excel, Visio, MS Project, Bluebeam, E‑builder Copper/Fiber, AutoCAD, and other relevant software and network testing tools; proficiency in reading, reviewing, and analyzing network construction drawings, authoring standard project‑specific documents, business and scope requirements, and project proposal requests.
• Proficiency in L2 protocols, including STP, DHCP, 802.1X, LACP, MLAG, VXLAN bridging, etc.; practical experience with L1 technologies (SMF, MMF, DWDM, transceivers, AOC, Twinax, fiber fan‑outs, or similar) and strong understanding of hardware platforms such as Cisco, Aruba, Juniper, and Brocade.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills and ability to communicate complex technical ideas to diverse stakeholders.
• Ability to establish and advance positive working relationships and a strong rapport with a diverse community of colleagues, stakeholders, and customers.
• Advanced organizational skills; can balance competing priorities and deliver concurrent projects. Experience using leading project management practices, including schedule management, status reporting, and communication of project risks and issues.
• Advanced problem‑solving skills; ability to uncover the root of difficult problems, scope solutions based on available resources and timelines, and make decisions with integrity.
• Experience participating in activities to advance an inclusive environment that values equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging.

• Valid California driver’s license.
