Job summary

Qualdoc seeks an Industrial Controls & Automation Engineer for an onsite, contract-to-hire role in Ashland, VA. You will design, program, and commission electrical control systems for material handling equipment and automation projects.

This onsite position requires expertise in PLCs, HMI/SCADA, VFDs, and crane systems. The ideal candidate has a Bachelor's in Electrical/Controls Engineering or equivalent experience, with at least five years in controls engineering.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent industry experience required.
Minimum of five years of controls engineering experience, preferably in heavy industrial equipment.
Hands-on experience with PLC programming, HMI/SCADA, and VFDs.
Experience with CMAA, NFPA 70 (NEC), and ASME B30 standards.
Experience with EtherNet/IP or Modbus or similar networks.
Experience with crane automation is a plus.

Responsibilities

Design electrical control systems for material handling equipment.
Develop, modify, and troubleshoot PLC programs, HMI interfaces, and control logic.
Prepare electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and control panel layouts.
Select and integrate components including VFDs, relays, sensors, and safety devices.
Support startup, commissioning, and field service with diagnostics and optimization.
Collaborate with engineers and technicians to drive continuous improvement.
