Job summary

Akamai is seeking a Senior Site Reliability Engineer to join the HIVE team. You will design, implement, and scale automation, observability, and tooling for compute services in a large distributed environment.

Ideal candidates have 8+ years in engineering, deep Linux kernel knowledge, and hands-on experience with KVM/QEMU and nested virtualization. You will collaborate across support, operations, and engineering to resolve complex issues and optimize performance.

Responsibilities

Our team designs, develops, and manages applications and infrastructure that support Akamai's Compute products and services. We do this while maintaining Akamai's mission at the forefront of what we do: make life better for billions of people, billions of times a day.

Partner with the best

In this role, you'll be at the forefront of Akamai Cloud platform software and hardware technologies. We're responsible for identifying performance bottlenecks and creating the supporting tooling to aid in these investigations. We work with physical, virtual and containerized Linux platform software. Our team collaborates with kernel and hardware teams to ensure newer kernels and operating systems are performant and qualified on new server builds.

As a Senior Site Reliability Engineer, you will be responsible for:

• Developing, testing, and distributing changes to automation, software, services, and tools the HIVE team is responsible for
• Designing and implementing enhancements to HIVE observability infrastructure in order to identify and correct problems before they impact our customers.
• Working in new tooling, code and environments and automating what's possible
• Creating supporting tooling using Ansible or Profiling to aide in performance investigations
• Developing subject matter expertise in various components across our Compute environment
• Collaborating with our support, operations and engineering teams to investigate and troubleshoot complex problems

Do what you love

To be successful in this role you will:

• 8+ years of experience and a Bachelor's diploma in Computer Science or its equivalent
• Possess advanced experience in Linux internals, system administration, and a deep understanding of underlying hardware and best practices for enabling advanced HW features in Linux.
• Possess advanced level experience with the Linux kernel, OS, KVM/QEMU, and nested virtualization.
• Possess expert level experience with designing, developing, and deploying software and infrastructure at scale
• Have advanced level experience in an engineering role, working with large scale distributed systems
• Have experience with tools like SaltStack, Ansible, Kubernetes, Chef, or Puppet for managing infrastructure at scale.

Compensation

Akamai is committed to fair and equitable compensation practices. For US based candidates only - the base salary for this position ranges from $146,400 - $263,600/year; a candidate’s salary is determined by various factors including, but not limited to, relevant work experience, skills, certifications and location. Compensation for candidates outside the US will vary. The compensation package may also include incentive compensation opportunities in the form of annual bonus or incentives, equity awards and an Employee Stock Purchase Plan (ESPP).
