Job summary

KCB, a leading mining environmental consultancy, seeks a Hydrotechnical Engineer for our Vancouver/Sudbury/Toronto/Fredericton offices. You will apply critical thinking to manage mine water systems and tailings-related designs within our Mining Environmental Group.

You will collaborate cross-functionally, use advanced modelling tools, lead teams, mentor staff, and engage clients to deliver robust, sustainable solutions across local and international projects.

Qualifications

  • A civil engineering degree; a master’s degree is an asset.
  • At least ten years’ civil design experience related to surface water controls for mining projects.
  • Eligible to register as a professional engineer in Canada.
  • Experience in hydrotechnical design analyses (water balance, open channel flow, erosion protection).
  • Ability to lead multidisciplinary project teams and build client relationships.
  • Strong communication skills and experience writing technical reports.
  • Experience in safety-focused environments with incident reporting.

Responsibilities

  • Use latest software like GoldSim, PCSWMM, HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS, Flow-2D/3D for design.
  • Develop mine site water balance and water quality models.
  • Design hydrotechnical components for tailings facilities on global projects.
  • Integrate climate resilience into hydrotechnical designs.
  • Contribute to risk assessments and Dam Safety Reviews.
  • Engage with clients and colleagues to deliver solutions.
  • Lead and mentor less experienced staff through methodologies.
  • Build client rapport from feasibility to mine closure.

What You Would Engage In

Our focus is on the application of critical thinking to the management of mine waste and water. By continuing your career journey with us, you would be part of our Mining Environmental Group, based out our Vancouver, Sudbury, Toronto, or Fredericton office. The role of Hydrotechnical Engineer will provide you with the opportunity to:

  • Work with the latest versions of software, including GoldSim, PCSWMM, HEC-RAS, HEC- HMS, Flow-2D/3D
  • Work on mine site wide water balance and water quality models (with the opportunity to use GoldSim)
  • Design hydrotechnical components tailings storage facilities for global mining projects
  • Incorporate climate change resiliency in hydrotechnical design
  • Contribute to risk assessments, Dam Safety Reviews and risk-informed decision making
  • Engage with clients, colleagues and suppliers on environmentally focused field programs and design solutions
  • Lead less experienced staff through the methodologies of design solutions
  • Build client rapport as projects progress from feasibility through to mine closure
What We Require

We respect the knowledge and experience you have gained to date and are willing to support you as you build on it. We do however require:

  • A degree in civil engineering: a master’s degree is considered an asset
  • At least ten years’ civil design experience related to surface water controls for mining projects
  • You must be eligible to register as professional engineer in the Canada
  • Experience in hydrotechnical designs analyses (e.g., water balance, open channel flow, erosion protection)
  • An ability to build relationships and lead multidisciplinary project-based teams
  • Passion for collaborating with clients and colleagues, fostering long-term relationships
  • Enhanced communication skills, which should include experience in writing technical reports and general project correspondence
  • Experience in a safety focused environment with near miss and incident reporting requirements

The salary for this position is $120,000 to $150,000 per year. Salary is based on applicable experience, education, and skill level.
