Job summary

Sargent & Lundy is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to design HVAC systems for laboratory and industrial facilities in the United States. You will lead design calculations, develop P&IDs, and prepare equipment specifications, while collaborating with project teams to deliver timely, cost-effective designs.

Essential skills include ABET-accredited BS in Mechanical Engineering, 5+ years of relevant HVAC experience, and proficiency with TRACE 700 or Carrier HAP.

Qualifications

  • BS in Mechanical Engineering from ABET-accredited program is required.
  • 5+ years of HVAC system design experience for laboratory/industrial facilities.
  • Proficiency in TRACE 700 or Carrier HAP.
  • Ability to create P&IDs and design flow diagrams.
  • Knowledge of relevant HVAC codes and standards.

Responsibilities

  • Designing HVAC systems, investigating and troubleshooting a wide variety of HVAC issues.
  • Develop integrated HVAC systems including commercial/industrial ventilation, control room, laboratory, chilled water, and heating systems.
  • Support planning, scheduling, and coordinating detailed design phases of facility engineering work.
  • Perform design calculations and develop detailed system designs.
  • Prepare technical specifications for HVAC equipment and engineering studies.
  • Support senior engineers and client teams; present findings and recommendations.

Description
  • You will work on challenging assignments that include designing of HVAC systems, investigating, trouble-shooting, and solving a wide variety of HVAC engineering issues
  • You will meet with others to develop integrated HVAC systems including the following:
    • Commercial/Industrial Ventilation Systems
    • Control room HVAC
    • Laboratory HVAC
    • Chilled water system design
    • Heating system design
  • Provide support in the planning, scheduling, conducting, or coordinating of the detailed design phases of all aspects of facility engineering work
  • Perform design calculations and develop detailed system design
  • Prepare technical specifications for HVAC equipment
  • Prepare engineering studies
  • You will provide support to other engineers, project managers, client personnel, and suppliers to assure a complete and timely design
  • You will assist senior engineers with reviews of existing facilities to propose upgrades and replacements, and may present findings and recommendations to clients and peers
  • Familiarity with ASHRAE and Current HVAC Industry Codes and Standards

Essential skills and experience:

  • BS in Mechanical Engineering from an ABET Engineering Accreditation Commission-approved program is required
  • 5+ years of relevant HVAC system, ventilation systems, heating systems, and chilled water system design experience for laboratory and/or industrial facilities
  • Proficiency in TRACE 700 or Carrier HAP
  • Ability to create design flow diagrams, and Process & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs)
  • Prior knowledge of relevant codes and standards applicable to HVAC and ventilation system

  • Overseeing engineers who program or script (e.g., Python, MATLAB, advanced Excel) to automate engineering tasks, with review of automated outputs, is valued but not required.
  • We also value additional learning, such as a minor, certificate, or other experience in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Software Engineering, or related fields that enables effective oversight of automation and agentic AI-enabled engineering workflows.

Compensation Range

$84,762 - $129,498
