Job summary

Okaloosa County School System in Crestview, FL, seeks a skilled operator to drive and operate heavy trucks and equipment for loading, hauling and district infrastructure work.

The role involves maintenance, site preparation, traffic control and supporting roadwork tasks across district facilities. Requires a Class A CDL with few restrictions, and 4 years of progressively responsible experience in heavy equipment operations.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED supplemented by four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in the operation of heavy and complex trucks and equipment, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
  • Experience in a lead/supervisory capacity preferred.
  • Knowledge of road maintenance and construction techniques preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Operates heavy trucks and equipment, to include dump trucks, flatbeds, loaders, backhoes, compactors, graders, dozers, trenchers, lowboys, cranes, vacuum trucks, and pans.
  • Transports equipment to work sites.
  • Inspects trucks, tools and equipment; performs maintenance on trucks, tools and equipment, ensuring trucks, tools and equipment are maintained and in proper working condition.
  • Performs physical labor in the maintenance, restoration or construction of roadways, utilities, drainage systems or disposal sites; works on special projects, drainage projects and erosion control.
  • Operates hand-held and gas-powered tools and equipment (i.e., pipe saws, air compressors, level instruments, pipe threaders, jack hammers, chain saws, shovels, rakes).
  • Prepares sites for work to include sweeping streets, shoveling and raking asphalt, stringing lines on roads, etc.
  • Assists with traffic control, to include setting up signs and barricades on roadways.
  • Performs related duties as required.

GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB Drives and operates heavy-duty trucks and equipment in the loading, hauling and distribution of materials, the transportation of equipment and the construction and maintenance of infrastructure.

EXAMPLES OF WORK

Minimum Qualifications

Education, Training, and Experience: High school diploma or GED supplemented by four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in the operation of heavy and complex trucks and equipment, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Experience in a lead/supervisory capacity preferred. Knowledge of road maintenance and construction techniques preferred.

Licenses and/or Certifications: Requires a valid class “A” commercial driver license (“CDL”) with no “O” (tractor/trailer) or “4” (manual transmission) restrictions. May require “N” (tanker endorsement), dependent upon assignment.

Other Requirements

Physical Requirements: Must be physically able to operate heavy and complex trucks and equipment requiring manipulation of multiple controls, where excellent eye/hand/foot coordination is essential for safe and productive operations. Must be able to exert 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, or 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently, or 10 to 20 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, and pull or otherwise move objects. Physical demands are in excess of sedentary work.

Language Ability: Requires the ability to communicate effectively in Standard English and in the various professional languages relevant to the primary functions of the department, including the ability to convey, record and exchange information. Requires the ability to explain procedures and to give, receive and follow oral and written instructions. Requires ability to read a variety of records, policy and procedure manuals, codes, etc., in moderately complex technical terminology. Requires the ability to read and interpret blueprints, plans and specifications.

Intelligence: Requires the ability to apply principles of logical thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions; to interpret a variety of technical instructions in written, mathematical or diagrammatic form; to make independent judgments in absence of supervision; to acquire knowledge of topics related to primary occupation. Requires the application of principles of influence systems.

Numerical Aptitude: Requires the ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide; calculate decimals and percentages.

Interpersonal Temperament: Requires the ability to tactfully and effectively interact with the public and with co-workers. Must be able to perform under stress when confronted with emergencies or tight deadlines.
