Job Description

Our Mission: At General Motors, our product teams are redefining mobility. Through a human-centered design process, we create vehicles and experiences that are designed not just to be seen, but to be felt. We’re turning today’s impossible into tomorrow’s standard - from breakthrough hardware and battery systems to intuitive design, intelligent software, and next-generation safety and entertainment features. Every day, our products move millions of people as we aim to make driving safer, smarter, and more connected, shaping the future of transportation on a global scale.

The Role

General Motors is at the forefront of the transformation of automotive with the electrification of our portfolio and the development of leading-edge central compute and autonomous capabilities. Our Semiconductor / Semiconductor Technology Engineering team is a dynamic, high-energy, and innovative group focused on design and commercialization of leading-edge hardware enabling the future of GM’s vehicle architecture. We are seeking a Senior Hardware Engineer to lead the hardware development of wired connectivity technology, including Serializers/Deserializers and Ethernet-based network solutions. This hardware engineer position is highly collaborative and depends on building strong partnerships with internal teams responsible for electronic control unit (ECU) design, as well as semiconductor partners. The role sits within the Network Technology and Design team in the compute and connectivity organization, reflecting GM’s growing need for hardware design ownership in this domain.

What You’ll Do (Responsibilities)
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams within software, mechanical, and manufacturing to ensure successful integration of network technologies into ECU electrical designs.
  • Perform detailed hardware analysis, including worst-case analysis, signal integrity, and power integrity, for SerDes and Ethernet interfaces and related circuitry.
  • Troubleshoot hardware issues, perform root cause analysis, and implement robust, long-term solutions across ECUs and associated connectivity hardware.
  • Conduct design reviews and provide constructive feedback to ensure high-quality, manufacturable designs that meet performance, safety, and reliability targets.
  • Develop hardware requirements and test specifications for SerDes/Ethernet connectivity and supporting circuitry.
  • Develop a clear test strategy covering all aspects of development, from component and board-level validation through system integration and production readiness.
  • Lead bench test execution throughout the development lifecycle, including bring-up, characterization, and debug of prototype and production-intent hardware.
  • Establish domain expertise for semiconductors and ECU product lines within your scope of responsibility, with focus on wired connectivity technology (SerDes and Ethernet PHYs, switches, and related components).
  • Manage technology roadmaps in close collaboration with industry leaders and semiconductor partners to ensure GM’s network hardware solutions remain on the forefront of performance, cost, and scalability.
Required Qualification
  • BS in Electrical Engineering / Electronics / Computer Science
  • 5+ total years of engineering experience at an OEM, OR at a semiconductor supplier, OR at a Tier 1 ECU supplier
  • 3+ years of engineering experience in electronic hardware design and development
  • Working knowledge of automotive electronic hardware and automotive software architecture
  • Strong proficiency in circuit design, schematic creation, and PCB layout
  • Experience in hardware design tools such as Mentor Graphics Xpedition and ORCAD
  • Experience with lab equipment such as power supplies, oscilloscopes, signal generators, and multimeters
  • Exceptional demonstrated experience leading projects to completion
What Will Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Skills)
  • Master's degree in electrical engineering
  • Industry knowledge with the design and application of different semiconductors
  • Exceptional collaboration and teamwork skills; demonstrated ability for working across functional and organizational boundaries
  • Strong problem-solving skills and proven ability to learn quickly
