Job summary

Calqulate Metrics Ltd in Huntsville, AL seeks a Senior Hardware Design Engineer to design and bring up rugged embedded electronics for defense, aerospace, and industrial applications. You will own complex hardware programs from architecture through production release, collaborating with hardware, FPGA, software, and product teams.

You will work with Intel/ARM processors, DDR memory, FPGAs, MPSoCs, RFSoCs, and high-speed interfaces like PCIe and multi-Gigabit Ethernet.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering or related field.
• 7+ years of relevant experience in electrical engineering or embedded hardware design.
• Strong understanding of PC architecture and hardware interconnects.
• Demonstrated PCB design capability with schematic capture and routing.
• Experience with high-speed PCB design considerations and differential signaling.
• Hands-on bring-up, debugging, verification, and validation.
• Ability to develop test/verification plans and meet product requirements.
• Willingness to work across the full product lifecycle from concept to production.

Your Role with the Company

As a Senior Hardware Design Engineer, you will serve as a senior technical contributor and design authority for complex embedded hardware programs. You will design, develop, test, debug, and support advanced electronic systems while working with a high degree of independence. You will design digital hardware incorporating Intel and ARM-based processors, DDR memory, FPGAs, MPSoCs, and RFSoCs, along with high-speed interfaces such as DDR4/DDR5, PCIe, and multi-Gigabit Ethernet.

Background Profile

Must Have

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline.
• 7+ years of relevant experience in electrical engineering, embedded hardware design, or electronic product development, consistent with the original role profile.
• Strong understanding of PC architecture, processor-based embedded systems, and hardware interconnects.
• Demonstrated PCB design capability, including schematic capture, component selection, and hands-on PCB placement and routing.
• Strong understanding of high-speed PCB design considerations, including differential signaling and practical effects such as transmission-line loss and crosstalk.
• Hands-on experience with hardware bring-up, troubleshooting, root-cause debug, and product verification/validation.
• Ability to develop test and verification plans and validate hardware against product requirements.
• Self-starting approach to problem-solving and ability to work independently through complex technical issues.
• Willingness and ability to contribute across the complete product development lifecycle, from requirements and concept through design, bring-up/debug, verification/validation, production release, and sustainment.

Desired

• Experience with Mentor Expedition Dx or comparable schematic/layout tools
• Familiarity with ARM processors is good. In-depth knowledge of support processors like network processors, GPUs, FPGAs, etc. is a value-add for this position.
• Experience with signal integrity analysis
• Experience with industry-leading CAD tools like Mentor Graphics, Cadence, or Altium is preferred.
• Experience with design for manufacturability and production release
• Experience designing ruggedized electronics for defense, aerospace, industrial, or other high-reliability applications
• Familiarity with Linux and Windows is important, Knowledge of C-code or Python code development important.
• Experience with low-level software development using C/C++
• Experience with system backplanes and I/O architectures
• Experience supporting products through their complete lifecycle, including engineering changes and post-release troubleshooting
• Demonstrated ability and willingness to use AI tools to improve engineering productivity, decision-making, work quality, and cost efficiency, while critically evaluating AI-generated outputs
