Job summary

Lewis & Clark Community College seeks a Habitat Senior Project Assistant to support the Conservation Program Manager in overseeing habitat strike team staff and implementing ecological restoration tools across bottomland forest sites along the Mississippi River flood plain.

The role includes field coordination, safety training, and landowner outreach, with opportunities to mentor student workers and collaborate with IDNR and other partners; a strong background in natural resources and hands-on

Qualifications

  • Associate degree or higher in natural resources with forestry/wildlife/ecology focus.
  • Field work can be strenuous; must be able to hike and work in hot/humid summers and cold winters.
  • Basic understanding of environmental or natural resource science.
  • Ability to operate and transport farming equipment (tractor, planter, mower).
  • Experience maintaining and repairing farm equipment.
  • Knowledge of wildlife ecology, forestry, wetland and grassland management.
  • Illinois prescribed fire certified within 45 days of hiring.
  • Illinois pesticide/herbicide certified within 45 days of hiring.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and organizational skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to work with others and independently, with heavy workload.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate with Conservation Program Manager to set weekly priorities with partners and staff.
  • Guide daily habitat management activities and ensure safety practices are followed by all team members.
  • Mentor part-time staff, student workers, and interns.
  • Oversee, maintain, and organize HST equipment and supplies for safety and usability.
  • Engage landowners to discuss conservation practices and provide guidance.
  • Coordinate with IDNR staff and other stakeholders.
  • Explain habitat and wildlife management options to landowners.
