Job summary

Schnabel in Jersey City, NJ seeks a Senior/Supervising Geotechnical Engineer to lead a diverse portfolio of geotechnical and interdisciplinary infrastructure projects. You will manage technical teams, oversee field investigations, and deliver analyses for dams, flood barriers, and heavy civil works across the Northeast and nationwide.

Qualifications include a geotechnical/civil engineering background, PE license or plan to obtain, and 8+ years of experience with strong communication skills.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Geotechnical/Civil Engineering; Master’s preferred.
  • 8+ years of geotechnical engineering experience.
  • Licensed PE or ability to obtain within 6 months.
  • Strong geotechnical/geostructural knowledge; groundwater hydrology.
  • Experience with automated workflows and data-driven processes; Python a plus.
  • Excellent verbal and written English communication skills.

Job Description:

Our Jersey City, NJ office is seeking a Senior/Supervising Geotechnical Engineer to join our Geotechnical and Water Engineering Practices. In this role, you will lead, manage, and provide technical support for a wide variety of complex geotechnical and interdisciplinary infrastructure projects involving dams and reservoirs, flood resiliency, heavy‑civil works, and other large‑scale infrastructure across the Northeast and nationwide. Job Responsibilities:

  • Lead, manage, and provide technical support within a collaborative, team of geotechnical professionals nationwide.
  • Develop, manage, and oversee the execution of geotechnical and geologic field investigations; evaluate instrumentation and monitoring data; and perform or oversee analyses and design related to soil and rock mechanics, foundations, dams and levees, canals, and flood protection structures. Additional responsibilities may include value engineering (VE) and forensic studies.
  • Supervise, mentor, and develop geotechnical engineering staff, fostering technical excellence and professional development.
  • Lead and support business development initiatives, including proposal preparation, building teams and industry partnerships, and aligning the relevant technical expertise to best solve client challenges.
  • Serve as a primary client interface, establishing goals and objectives for project teams, and planning, scheduling, and managing resources to deliver high‑quality work on time and within budget.
  • Promote and integrate innovative technologies such as data‑driven design, numerical modeling, and automated workflows to enhance project efficiency and quality.
  • Contribute to a positive and collaborative office culture, helping cultivate a best‑in‑class environment where employees can thrive and reach their full potential.
  • Contribute to maintaining and developing Schnabel’s strong brand in the geotechnical and water markets through thoughtful leadership embodied in published papers, writing papers, and participation at recognized conferences and workshops.

Required Skills/Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree (Master’s Degree preferred) in Geotechnical and/or Civil Engineering, or related fields.
  • 8+ years of experience in the geotechnical engineering field.
  • Licensed Professional Engineer or ability to become registered within 6 months.
  • Extensive geotechnical background, including a strong fundamental knowledge of principles of geotechnical and geostructural engineering, soil and rock mechanics, earthquake engineering, and groundwater hydrology.
  • Experience developing automated workflows and data‑driven processes; proficiency in Python or similar programming languages a plus.
  • Proven ability to communicate complex technical concepts clearly to clients, stakeholders, and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Relevant geotechnical expertise with dams, levees, flood barriers, cofferdams, and other hydraulic structures, including but not limited to seepage, static and seismic stability analysis, liquefaction analysis, deformation analysis, and foundation and settlement analysis.
  • Strong technical background using various geotechnical and computer‑aided design software, such as GeoStudio, Rocscience, gINT/OpenGround, CWALSHT, PYWall, LPILE, Snail, GROUP, STAAD Pro, Shoring Suite, and AutoCAD/Civil 3D. Numerical modeling is a plus.
  • A strong work ethic, the desire to perform professionally at a high level, and an orientation to continual self‑improvement.
  • Excellent English technical verbal and written communication skills.

  • Ability to pass a background check which may include criminal history, motor vehicle record, and credit check.
  • Ability to pass a pre‑employment screening.

The compensation range for this position is between $120,000 to $150,000. Compensation for this position may vary based on geographic location and other factors. We remain committed to providing competitive and equitable compensation to all employees, regardless of their location.
