Job summary

Freeport-McMoRan Inc. in Morenci, AZ seeks a Geologist to log drill samples, perform geologic mapping, and build resource block models under supervision.

You will supervise drilling contractors, integrate diverse data into maps, and mentor Geologist I and II to strengthen skills while ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory standards.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Geology or related field and five years of experience in Geology or related scientific field, OR
  • Master's degree in Geology and three years of experience in Geology or related scientific field
  • Ability to communicate in English with respect to job assignments, procedures, and safety standards

Responsibilities

  • Log core and drill cuttings; conduct geologic mapping and resource modeling under supervision
  • Supervise drilling, road construction, and sample preparation by contractors
  • Integrate geological data into maps and cross sections and develop level plans
  • Mentor Geologist I and II to develop skills
  • Supervise a team of Geologists in creating resource block models meeting corporate standards
  • Maintain knowledge of Federal, State, and local regulations
  • Provide guidance to site management on applicable programs and regulations
  • Prepare drill hole databases and maps of deposits and exploration records
  • Collaborate with Metallurgists for sample processing and ore-type development
  • Perform surface and underground geologic mapping
  • Assist in short-range planning and budget preparation for exploration

Where You Will Work

Located approximately 50 miles northeast of Safford, Arizona on U.S. Highway 191, Morenci operations (an open-pit copper mining complex) has been in continuous operation since 1939. The operation consists of two concentrators, crushed-ore leach pad and stacking system, a low-grade run-of-mine (ROM) leaching system; four SX plants; and three EW tank houses that produce copper cathode.

What You Will Do

Under general supervision, complete logging of drill samples, conduct geologic mapping andcomplete resource block models. Provide technical expertise, guidance and leadership in geological exploration and resource modeling.

  • Perform logging of core and reverse circulation drill cuttings and peer review evaluation of Geologist I and II logging quality
  • Supervise and direct drilling, road construction and drill sample preparation by contractors
  • Integrate and interpret all geological data (e.g. rock type, alteration, structure), assay, and mineralogical data into geologic maps and internally consistent cross sections and level plans
  • Provide coaching and mentoringto Geologist I and II to develop their skills
  • Supervise a team of Geologists in the completion of computerized resource block models that meet corporate modeling standards
  • Maintain current working knowledge of applicable Federal, State and local regulations
  • Provide guidance and counsel to the site management team on applicable programs, practices and existing/proposed local, state and federal regulations
  • Prepare and update drill hole database, maps of deposits and other exploration records
  • Work with Metallurgists in providing samples for processing testing and evaluation and in the development of ore types
  • Perform surface and underground geologic mapping
  • Assist in the formulation of short-range plans and budget preparation for geological exploration and evaluation at assigned site
  • Performs other duties as required
What You Bring To Freeport
Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Geology or related scientific discipline and five (5) years of experience in Geology or related scientific field, OR

Master's degree in Geologyand three (3) years experience in Geology or related scientific field

  • Ability to understand and apply verbal and written work and safety-related instructions and procedures given in English
  • Ability to communicate in English with respect to job assignments, job procedures, and applicable safety standards
  • Must be able to work in a potentially stressful environment
  • Work is in a mine or manufacturing plant setting, which may include exposure to extremes in temperature and humidity, moving mechanical parts, risk of electrical shock, toxic chemicals, explosives, fumes or airborne particles
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, sit, demonstrate manual dexterity, climb stairs and ladders, work on elevated platforms, talk, hear and see
  • Occasionally may be required to lift moderately heavy objects (up to 60 pounds) during the course of the workday
  • Personal protective equipment is required when performing work in a mine, outdoor, or manufacturing plant environment, including hard hat, hearing protection, safety glasses, safety footwear, and as needed, respirator, rubber steel-toe boots, protective clothing, gloves and any other protective equipment as required
What We Offer You

The estimated annual pay range for this role is currently$97,500-$138,000. This range reflects base salary only and does not include bonus payments, benefits or retirement contributions. Actual base pay is determined by experience, qualifications, skills and other job-related factors. This role is eligible for additional incentive compensation considerations based on company and individual performance. Additionally, this position is currently eligible for annual long-term incentive consideration. Long-term incentives are contingent upon authorized approval under the terms and conditions of the Company's plan and award agreements. More details will be shared during the hiring process.
