Job summary

Verrus is seeking an experienced Geologist to join a major open pit copper mining operation in the southwestern United States. You will lead geological exploration and resource modeling, logging drill samples, and mentoring junior geologists on site.

You will supervise contractor drilling activities, integrate diverse data into maps and plans, and ensure compliance with safety and regulatory standards in a dynamic mining setting.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Geology with 5+ years of experience in geology or related field, OR Master's with 3+ years.
  • Ability to understand and apply verbal and written safety instructions in English.
  • Willingness to work in a mining environment with exposure to extremes and hazards.

Responsibilities

  • Log drill samples, perform geologic mapping, and build resource block models.
  • Log core and drill cuttings; peer-review logging quality of Geologist I/II.
  • Supervise drilling, road construction, and sample preparation by contractors.
  • Integrate geological data into maps, cross sections, and level plans.
  • Mentor Geologist I and II to develop skills; supervise team under corporate standards.
  • Maintain drill hole databases and relevant exploration records.

Where You Will Work

This role is based at a large, established open pit copper mining operation in the southwestern United States. The site includes significant mining, processing, leaching and copper production infrastructure.

The operation is supported by an established local community with access to housing assistance, healthcare, childcare, recreation and other amenities. Further information on the location and available support will be shared during the recruitment process.

What You Will Do
  • Under general supervision, complete logging of drill samples, conduct geologic mapping and complete resource block models. Provide technical expertise, guidance and leadership in geological exploration and resource modeling.
  • Perform logging of core and reverse circulation drill cuttings and peer review evaluation of Geologist I and II logging quality
  • Supervise and direct drilling, road construction and drill sample preparation by contractors
  • Integrate and interpret all geological data (e.g. rock type, alteration, structure), assay, and mineralogical data into geologic maps and internally consistent cross sections and level plans
  • Provide coaching and mentoring to Geologist I and II to develop their skills
  • Supervise a team of Geologists in the completion of computerized resource block models that meet corporate modeling standards
  • Maintain current working knowledge of applicable Federal, State and local regulations
  • Provide guidance and counsel to the site management team on applicable programs, practices and existing/proposed local, state and federal regulations
  • Prepare and update drill hole database, maps of deposits and other exploration records
  • Work with Metallurgists in providing samples for processing testing and evaluation and in the development of ore types
  • Perform surface and underground geologic mapping
  • Assist in the formulation of short-range plans and budget preparation for geological exploration and evaluation at assigned site
  • Performs other duties as required
What You Bring
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Geology or related scientific discipline and five (5) years of experience in Geology or related scientific field, OR
  • Master's degree in Geology and three (3) years experience in Geology or related scientific field
Criteria/Conditions
  • Ability to understand and apply verbal and written work and safety-related instructions and procedures given in English
  • Ability to communicate in English with respect to job assignments, job procedures, and applicable safety standards
  • Must be able to work in a potentially stressful environment
  • Work is in a mine or manufacturing plant setting, which may include exposure to extremes in temperature and humidity, moving mechanical parts, risk of electrical shock, toxic chemicals, explosives, fumes or airborne particles
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, sit, demonstrate manual dexterity, climb stairs and ladders, work on elevated platforms, talk, hear and see
  • Occasionally may be required to lift moderately heavy objects (up to 60 pounds) during the course of the workday
  • Personal protective equipment is required when performing work in a mine, outdoor, or manufacturing plant environment, including hard hat, hearing protection, safety glasses, safety footwear, and as needed, respirator, rubber steel-toe boots, protective clothing, gloves and any other protective equipment as required
