Job summary

The Washington Post seeks a Senior Applied Machine Learning Scientist to lead AI/ML system development powering journalism. You will focus on Ask The Post, AI-powered search, retrieval, ranking, content understanding, and reader experiences.

You’ll work at the intersection of generative AI, NLP, ranking, and experimentation to drive products that benefit readers and the business. On-site work is required in Washington, DC.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in a technical field and 4+ years in applied ML or NLP.
• Proven ability to design, evaluate, and deploy ML models on large data.
• Strong Python experience and familiarity with ML frameworks.

Responsibilities

• Lead applied research and development for AI/ML systems across generative AI, search, retrieval, ranking and recommendation.
• Design, train, evaluate, and deploy advanced ML models with clear metrics and experiments.
• Collaborate with engineers, data teams, editors, and product managers to deliver impactful AI/ML solutions.
