Job summary

Virtuous is seeking a Senior Software Engineer (Full Stack) to join a growing engineering team, collaborating with product, design, and engineering leadership to build, scale, and maintain our web platform for nonprofits.

You will own end-to-end features across the stack, including performance tuning, async processing, and server-side HTML with HTMX, while leveraging AI tooling to boost productivity without sacrificing quality.

Qualifications

• 6+ years building modern web applications, including production-scale experience.
• Proficiency in Python and frameworks like Django (or similar).
• Hands-on experience with AI coding agents (Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot, etc.).
• Experience operating cloud infrastructure (AWS, GCP, or Azure) and infrastructure-as-code tooling (e.g., Terraform).
• Experience with JavaScript/TypeScript and frontend frameworks such as React or Vue.
• Strong understanding of PostgreSQL — indexing, query optimization, and scaling strategies.
• Experience integrating with RESTful and/or GraphQL APIs.
• Solid DevOps fundamentals: CI/CD, containers, monitoring, and scaling under load.
• Comfort with observability tooling (metrics, logging, tracing, alerting).
• A love for building quality products that delight users and solve real problems.
• Strong communication skills and a team-first mindset.

Responsibilities

• Own the performance and scalability of our data layer as we onboard larger and more complex organizations.
• Own asynchronous and background-processing infrastructure (e.g., Celery).
• Design, build, and ship net-new features across the full stack from messaging to analytics.
• Help reinforce our move to a server-side HTMX-based frontend.
• Design, build, and maintain scalable web applications used by nonprofits globally.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to translate user needs into solutions.
• Write clean, testable, and efficient code across frontend and backend.
• Contribute to architectural discussions and technical decisions.
• Participate in code reviews and foster a learning culture.
• Own reliability, performance, and observability with meaningful alerts.
• Provide feedback on technology choices as stack evolves.
• Support a culture of experimentation and continuous delivery.
