Job summary

Orbion Space Technology Inc. in Houghton, MI, seeks a Senior Fluidics Engineer to lead fluid control systems for electric spacecraft propulsion. You will own and advance pressure and flow regulation products, mentor a small team, and drive sustaining and new development across thruster systems.

The role requires a BS in Mechanical/Aerospace Engineering or Physics, 4+ years in production (prefer aerospace), and 2+ years with fluid systems. Travel (<5%) and collaboration across cross‑functional teams are essential.

Qualifications

  • Must meet definition of US Person.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Aerospace Engineering, Physics, or related field.
  • At least 4 years’ experience in a production environment (preferably in the aerospace arena).
  • At least 2 years' experience with fluid systems or fluidics engineering.
  • Willingness to travel occasionally (<5%).
  • Ability to collaborate in a team setting and be an active individual contributor.
  • Great communication skills and cross-functional teamwork.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and own project engineering and team leadership efforts by establishing plans, schedules, budgets, designs, and procedures.
  • Formulate and implement fluid system development and investigation activities, including laboratory testing and data analysis.
  • Plan and lead system requirement verification efforts and test campaigns, including but not limited to receiving inspections, acceptance tests, and qualification tests.
  • Lead efforts with suppliers and manufacturing shops to source flight components, piece-parts, and sub-assemblies.
  • Represent the company at technical conferences, trade shows, and other technical and sales functions.
  • Support and mentor junior engineers.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Job description

Orbion is seeking a Senior Fluidics Engineer! The Engineer will be responsible for the fluid control systems that supply propellent to Orbion’s electric spacecraft propulsion systems. These flow systems control high and low pressures of gaseous elements, flowing at very low flow rates. Leading a small team, the Senior Fluidics Engineer will be responsible for the sustaining engineering of existing pressure and flow regulation products, as well as the development of these products to support new thruster systems.

The successful candidate will have demonstrated knowledge of fluid behavior across a wide range of pressures and temperature, understand the material issues related to flow systems in space environments, and be excited about owning a product line.

RESPONSIBILITES
  • Lead and own project engineering and team leadership efforts by establishing plans, schedules, budgets, designs, and procedures

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • Must meet definition of US Person
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Physics, or directly related degree
  • At least 4 years’ experience in a production environment (preferably in the aerospace arena)
  • At least 2 years' experience with fluid systems or fluidics engineering
  • A solid understanding of applicable engineering principles, business practices, and experience working directly with hardware in the aerospace industry
  • Willingness to travel on occasion (<5%)
  • Ability to collaborate in a team setting as well as be an active individual contributor
  • Great communication skills, technical depth, breadth, and passion will enable you to work effectively with cross functional (electrical, mechanical, software, system, test) product development teams
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • A solid understanding of applicable fluidics engineering principles, business practices, and experience working directly with hardware in the aerospace industry
  • Experience with pressure fittings, plumbing, valves, and vacuum systems
  • Experience with production drawings, configuration management, and GD&T
  • Experience with modeling tools, including creating solid models, as well as executing and interpreting structural, thermal, fluid, and magnetic field models
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Prolonged periods of standing on concrete surfaces and at times, sitting at a desk and working on a computer
  • Must be able to lift/carry up to 40 pound loads from floor level to chest level
  • Manual dexterity to evaluate, install, and modify equipment
  • Fine motor skills required for minute adjustments
