Hermeus is seeking a Senior Flight Software Engineer to design, develop, and implement software for cutting-edge aircraft systems. You will work closely with hardware and systems engineers to deliver reliable, safe flight software for high-speed aircraft.

The role may consider candidates at Senior or principal levels, offering growth in a fast-paced startup environment with a focus on rapid prototyping and safety-critical development.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Engineering, or a related field.
• 5+ years of experience in embedded flight software development.
• Proficiency in C/C++ and embedded flight software development tools/methodologies.

Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain embedded flight software for aircraft systems (flight control, navigation, communication, avionics).
• Collaborate with hardware engineers to ensure seamless integration of software and hardware.
• Write efficient, well-documented code meeting safety and performance requirements.
• Develop software requirements and design documents.
• Participate in code and design reviews for high-quality software.
• Test and debug software to meet specifications and performance targets.
• Work with systems engineers on system-level tests and simulations.
• Contribute to safety-critical software and regulatory documentation (DO-178C/MIL-STD-1553 etc.).
• Stay current with trends in embedded flight software and apply them to our systems.

About The Role

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Senior Flight Software Engineer to join Hermeus, a hypersonic aircraft startup company. As a Senior Flight Software Engineer, you will work closely with our hardware and systems engineers to design, develop, and implement software for our cutting‑edge aircraft systems.

We are open to considering Software Engineer II or Principal Engineer candidates for this role.

Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain embedded flight software for our aircraft systems, including flight control, navigation, communication, and avionics systems.
• Collaborate with hardware engineers to ensure seamless integration of software and hardware components.
• Write efficient, high-quality, and well‑documented code that meets the performance and safety requirements of the aircraft.
• Develop software requirements and design documents.
• Participate in code and design reviews to ensure high-quality software.
• Test and debug software to ensure it meets design specifications and performance requirements.
• Work with systems engineers to develop and execute system‑level tests and simulations.
• Participate in the development of safety‑critical software and documentation to ensure compliance with regulatory standards.
• Stay up‑to‑date with emerging trends and technologies in the embedded flight software field and apply them to our aircraft systems.
• Develop and maintain technical documentation.

Requirements

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Engineering, or a related field.
• 5+ years of experience in embedded flight software development.
• Professional experience programming in C/C++ and experience with embedded flight software development tools and methodologies.

Preferred Skills And Experience

• Experience with real-time operating systems (RTOS) or embedded Linux for real‑time applications.
• Familiarity with low-level hardware interfaces (e.g., CAN, RS422, MIL-STD-1553, ARINC429, etc.), and software development for embedded applications.
• Experience with fault-redundant design as well as safety‑critical software development processes, such as DO-178C or MIL-516C. Knowledge of avionics systems, flight control systems, and navigation systems.
• Strong problem‑solving skills and attention to detail.
• Excellent communication skills and ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
• Experience working in a startup environment is a plus.

$159,750 - $195,250 a year

The salary range listed for this role is intended as a general guideline. Final compensation will be determined based on a variety of factors, including role scope and responsibilities, relevant experience, education and training, key skills, market data, and business needs.
