Job summary

Arup, a global design and engineering firm, seeks a Senior Fire Protection Engineer / Chemical Engineer to lead fire safety projects across markets. The role involves technical leadership, code compliance, and collaboration with architects and owners to deliver innovative, performance-based solutions.

The position may be based in multiple offices (Los Angeles, San Francisco, Oakland preferred) with consideration for Seattle, San Diego, Houston, Dallas, or Austin.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Fire Protection Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or related field.
• Minimum of 5 years of professional working experience in Fire Protection Engineering with a minimum of 8 years in any engineering field.
• Minimum of 2 years managing projects.
• P.E. license in fire protection engineering (preferred).
• Knowledge of NFPA codes and standards (e.g., NFPA 2, 30, 33, 34, 45, 55, 68, 69, 77, 86, 484, 495, 496, 497, 499, 660).
• Familiarity with material hazards (flammable liquids, dusts, reactive metals, gases, cryogenics, explosives, corrosives).
• Knowledge of process safety topics (hazardous exhaust, explosion control, spill containment, fire-rated enclosure, grounding/bonding).

Responsibilities

• Project management of multiple concurrent projects including planning, staffing, financial management and delivery.
• Provide consulting fire protection engineering services to architects, developers, owners, government, and insurers.
• Provide fire and life code consulting including ICC and NFPA standards.
• Perform hazardous material analysis for code compliance and inventory management strategies.
• Develop performance-based design approaches for hazardous material code requirements.
• Integrate code requirements for control areas, labs, and high-hazard occupancies.
• Perform risk assessments for hazardous processes (qualitative/quantitative).
• Analyze ignition hazards for flammable liquids and develop mitigations.
• Conduct hazardous exhaust, gas release, and dust hazard analyses; develop mitigation strategies.
• Design gas and flame detection systems (flame detectors, gas detectors).
• Determine electrical classification for hazardous areas with diagrams and explanations.
• Review site separation for bulk hazardous materials storage.
• Perform site visits and coordinate with architects, contractors, and consultants.
• Present design approaches to authorities having jurisdiction.
• Contribute to Arup research and technical skill development.
• Collaborate across multiple offices in a multi-disciplinary environment.
