We are seeking a Senior Fire Protection Engineer to support mission-critical healthcare facilities and complex building infrastructure projects. This is a highly specialized engineering role focused on fire protection, life safety, healthcare environments, and code compliance.
The ideal candidate will have a strong background in Fire Protection Engineering, a Professional Engineer (PE) license, and significant experience applying fire and life-safety codes within healthcare facilities. Experience working with The Joint Commission (TJC/Joint Commission) and understanding how fire protection requirements are practically applied in healthcare environments is especially important.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and perform fire protection and life-safety engineering evaluations for healthcare and other complex facilities.
- Design, review, and evaluate fire protection systems, including fire alarm, detection, notification, suppression, and related systems.
- Apply applicable fire protection, building, life-safety, healthcare, and federal codes and standards to real-world facility conditions.
- Interpret and apply The Joint Commission (TJC/Joint Commission) requirements within healthcare environments.
- Prepare and review engineering calculations, specifications, construction documents, reports, assessments, and technical recommendations.
- Evaluate existing facilities, infrastructure, equipment, maintenance practices, and operational conditions.
- Conduct site assessments and inspections and develop recommendations for repairs, upgrades, sustainment, and infrastructure improvements.
- Support design development, construction, renovation, commissioning, and functional testing activities.
- Review plans and technical documentation for compliance with applicable codes, standards, and project requirements.
- Coordinate with multidisciplinary engineering and project teams.
- Respond to technical questions and Requests for Information (RFIs).
- Develop cost estimates and evaluate proposed solutions based on code compliance, effectiveness, risk, and life-cycle considerations.
- Prepare and communicate technical findings to both engineering and nontechnical stakeholders.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Fire Protection Engineering strongly preferred.
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering may be considered for candidates with substantial fire protection engineering experience.
- Minimum 7 years of relevant engineering experience; 10+ years strongly preferred.
- Significant experience specifically in fire protection engineering.
- Ability to obtain a security clearance.
- Travel to healthcare and project sites approximately 8-10 times per year.
- Ability to work independently in a remote or hybrid environment.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license.
- Significant healthcare facility experience.
- Experience working with The Joint Commission (TJC) and healthcare life-safety requirements.
- Strong understanding of how fire protection and life-safety codes are applied in active healthcare environments.
- Experience with Department of Defense, federal, municipal, or other highly regulated facilities.
- Experience evaluating existing infrastructure and recommending repairs, upgrades, or system improvements.
- Knowledge of NFPA standards, International Building Code, Life Safety Code, and other applicable fire protection and building codes.
- Experience with CAD/BIM and fire protection design documentation.
