Job summary

ABB is seeking a Field Service Technician to join our Smart Power team in Cedar Knolls, NJ. You will perform on-site service tasks, installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting while upholding safety and quality standards.

You will train and supervise technicians, prepare material lists, and pursue opportunities to improve customer satisfaction and operations, in a role offering remote-ready work model where applicable.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology with 6+ years' experience servicing critical power equipment OR Associates Degree in electrical technology with 8+ years' experience in servicing critical power equipment OR High School Diploma/GED and equivalent work and/or military experience (10+ years) servicing critical power equipment.
  • Advanced interpersonal and written/verbal communication across organizational levels.
  • Proficiency in MS Office; ability to manage projects with MS Project or Excel.
  • Ability to write test plans and report test results.
  • Strong organizational skills and deadline-driven administration.
  • Demonstrates urgency and ownership to complete the job.

Responsibilities

  • Work on-site with customers to identify opportunities for operational improvement and eliminate pain points.
  • Perform field service tasks, including identifying technical issues and on-site troubleshooting within certified areas.
  • Execute installation and commissioning, maintenance, repairs, extensions, upgrades, retrofits, end-of-life services, and replacements.
  • Support certification of Associate Field Service Technicians and Field Service Technicians; coach and supervise complex site activities.
  • Prepare material lists and ensure parts meet quality standards; anticipate equipment failures and recommend actions.
  • Identify opportunities for product and quality improvements; communicate findings to management.
  • Follow safety protocols and environmental practices; report unsafe activities or incidents.

ABB Smart Power provides energy distribution solutions for data centers, industrial and manufacturing plants, critical infrastructure and commercial buildings. The Division's technical teams work closely with industry partners, delivering advanced solutions that support rapid growth, energy transition, and sustainability objectives. The Division's portfolio includes industrial circuit breakers, low-voltage systems, motor starting applications, and safety devices like switches and relays. Its Power Protection unit supports the world's largest data center companies with advanced energy-efficient UPS solutions. The Division's ABB Ability Energy Manager provides a scalable, easy-to-use platform that helps organizations save energy and reduce CO2 emissions.
The work model for the role is: Remote {#LI-Remote}, successful candidates will be located in Cedar Knolls, NJ.

Your role and responsibilities:
  • Work on-site with customers to identify opportunities for operational improvement
    and eliminate pain points.

  • Perform field service tasks, including identifying technical issues and conducting
    on-site troubleshooting within certified areas.

  • Execute installation and commissioning, maintenance, repairs, extensions,
    upgrades, retrofits, end-of-life services, and replacements.

  • Support the certification process of Associate Field Service Technicians and Field
    Service Technicians. Coach technicians and supervise complex site activities. Act as trainers when needed, for team members and customers.

  • Prepare material lists for service activities and ensure all materials, parts, and equipment meet quality standards and are available. Proactively identify potential equipment failures and recommend corrective actions.

  • Contribute to customer satisfaction by building and maintaining positive relationships. Identify potential new sales opportunities while addressing customer needs and communicate them internally.

  • Identify opportunities for product and quality improvements. Provide recommendations to management for improving operations and customer service.

  • Follow safety protocols and maintain safe work and environmental practices. Report unsafe practices and incidents.

Qualifications for the role:
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology with 6+ years' experience servicing critical power equipment OR Associates Degree in electrical technology with 8+ years' experience in servicing critical power equipment OR High School Diploma/GED and equivalent work and/or military experience (10+ years) servicing critical power equipment.

  • Advanced ability to write test plans and reports detailing test results.

  • Advanced ability to stay organized and meet deadlines on administrative duties.

  • Works with a sense of urgency and ownership; until the job is complete!

While base salary is determined by things such as the successful applicant's qualifications and experience, this position is expected to pay between $83,300 and $133,280 annually.
