Job summary

R.C. Construction Co., Inc. seeks a qualified Senior Surveyor to oversee field crews, ensure accuracy, and drive quality on multi-project sites in Charleston, SC.

Job description

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES

  • Work to ensure construction progresses as scheduled and adheres to contract specifications; supervises Field Engineers’ layout/surveying
  • Construction staking for vertical and horizontal construction
  • Grade control
  • Machine control project installation
  • Provides quality control of project specifications pertaining to machine control and engineering accuracy
  • Participates in pre-survey planning meetings with project managers, engineers, and contractor representatives
  • Assigns and monitors work, and conducts evaluations of field engineers/technicians
  • Instructs and trains field engineers/technicians in survey and mapping methods, use of equipment, and field safety procedures
  • Prepares 3D surface models appropriate for use with machine control applications
  • Performs complex surveying calculations using engineering calculator, computer, graphics and coordinate geometry software
  • Analyzes raw data for mathematical closure and geometric accuracy
  • Prepares and/or approves finished grade sheets, topographic maps, records of survey, corner records, and other survey reports
  • Maintains field data records, survey project files, and indexing systems
  • Responsible for all modeling of layout information
  • Responsible for all engineering equipment and ordering
  • Adheres to the engineering budget within each job
EDUCATION AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience with supervision and quality control of survey crews, field engineers across multiple concurrent projects
  • Professional surveying license required
  • Proficient with computer software – Microsoft Office Suite (Excel templates), AutoCAD Civil 3D, Carlson, Topcon 3D-Office
  • Strong communication and organization skills
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain military base access
  • Physical presence required on site. Heavy travel required
  • Strong ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications, with the ability to recognize discrepancies
  • Ability to meet deadlines and multitask in a fast-paced environment
  • Broad understanding of construction practices and safety standards
  • Ability to spot constructability issues beforehand and solve complex problems
  • Leadership skills to manage and support staff for multi-disciplinary projects
  • Excellent verbal, interpersonal, and written communication skills
  • Ability to travel, TWIC and OSHA 30
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Ability to work up to a 12-hour shift in all weather and temperature extremes
  • Ability to move in and around confined and cluttered places and uneven areas
  • Ability to occasionally lift and/or push/pull up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to climb up to 12 ft
  • Ability to occasionally bend, stoop, kneel, reach, and lift overhead, work at heights frequently throughout a 12-hour shift
  • Walk and balance while working in rough terrain to access equipment, tools, materials, and job site to complete work
  • Must be able to sit for long periods of time
  • Use of hands to grasp and feel objects, tools, or controls
  • Ability to frequently repeat the same movements with arms, hands, wrist, and fingers (keyboarding)
  • Ability to reach overhead, at or below the shoulder
  • Use fingers to grasp, move, or assemble small objects
  • Specific vision abilities required: close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus
  • Hearing adequate to perform all tasks and understand speech
  • Speak clearly so listeners can understand
WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • Employee will be required to wear personal protective equipment as needed to perform job tasks
  • Employee is occasionally exposed to noise, dust, and various types of smells
  • Employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes, or airborne particles
  • Employee must be able to properly use and handle toxic or caustic chemicals
  • Employee is occasionally exposed to wet, hot, and/or humid conditions, high precarious places, and outside weather conditions
  • Employee is regularly working indoors, in an office setting
  • Employee is regularly exposed to moderate noise levels
  • Employee is expected to work in a safe and efficient manner while maintaining a clean work area
