Job summary

Coherent Corp. in Sunnyvale, CA, seeks a packaging engineer to design and validate multi-fiber module packaging for fiber optic devices. You will lead mechanical design, material selection, and manufacturing transfer, performing simulations, reliability tests, and supplier engagement to ensure performance meets cost targets.   • Generate specs to meet performance and cost targets.
  • Develop fixtures, inspection processes, and run reliability tests for modules.
  • Release design to manufacturing and lead transfer to production.
  • Provide technical support and failure analysis.

Job description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities
  • Design and develop multi‑fiber module packaging for fiber optic devices and modules, creating the physical structures including enclosure, fiber mounting, connection, and sealing.
  • Conduct packaging design simulations and analyses to meet operating conditions, including vibration, shock, and environmental testing.
  • Select appropriate materials considering thermal stability, mechanical strength, thermal expansion, etc., and identify vendors for parts.
  • Generate specifications to satisfy performance requirements while meeting cost targets.
  • Develop manufacturing fixtures, inspection processes, and run reliability/qualification tests to verify performance and reliability of the optical module.
  • Release design to manufacturing and lead manufacturing transfer to production.
  • Provide technical support and failure analysis.
Education & Experience
  • BS or MS in Telecom, optomechanical engineering, physics, or related technical fields.
  • Minimum 2 years of related experience.
Skills
  • Multidisciplinary background in optics, materials science, mechanical engineering preferred.
  • Familiar with telecom fibers, cables, connectors, epoxies, and sealing mechanisms.
  • Work independently in mechanical design with SolidWorks and other software.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and manage assigned tasks and projects effectively.
  • Ability to read, learn, and analyze complex materials and processes, search for solutions in the public domain, and develop innovative solutions.
  • Ability to leverage knowledge and experience to solve problems resourcefully.
  • Ability to search, locate, and work proactively with external suppliers in your area of expertise to engage other capabilities into project tasks.
  • Effectively manage multiple priorities and projects.
  • Ability to teach and train others within the work group.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication and presentation skills.
  • Proficient computer skills, experience with Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, email, internet access, and ability to develop tools or special applications within these packages.
Working Conditions
  • Regular use of a computer and other office equipment is necessary.
  • Interaction with team members and external contacts is a regular part of the job.
Physical Requirements
  • Sitting for extended periods while working on a computer or conducting meetings.
  • Use of hands and fingers for typing, writing, and handling documents.
  • Occasional lifting of objects or materials up to 20 pounds for administrative tasks.
  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing.
  • Mobility within the office environment to attend meetings.
Safety Requirements

This includes the use of proper protective equipment (PPE) as required by the job responsibilities. Managers will ensure that all safety and environmental procedures are followed consistently, that risk assessments are performed, and that proper training, work instructions, and required PPE are available and monitored for compliance.
