Job summary

Schuff Steel is seeking a Senior Estimator in San Diego, CA to produce accurate, detail-oriented estimates for steel projects of varying size and complexity. You will collaborate with fabrication, purchasing, field erection, pre-construction and vendors to deliver reliable cost projections.

The role requires seven to ten years of estimating experience in structural steel, a strong grasp of drawings, specs, and cost drivers, and the ability to lead estimation efforts and meet deadlines.

Qualifications

  • Seven to ten (7-10) years of progressively estimating and bidding structural steel and heavy plate projects.
  • Experience leading estimator responsibilities is required (Lead Estimator role).
  • Proven ability to provide accurate information aiding operations in project goals.

Responsibilities

  • Review blueprints, specs, schedules and other docs to prepare accurate estimates.
  • Collaborate with Sales and Pre-construction to define project scope and deadlines.
  • Work with fabrication and erection teams to determine build approach.
  • Follow Schuff Steel estimating guidelines and procedures.
  • Prepare detailed estimates for new projects and changes to existing contracts.
  • Takeoffs of steel, shop and field labor, buyouts, equipment, and subcontractor work.
  • Enter all estimated data into proprietary software and share results with leadership.
  • Discuss alternative recommendations when needed to meet client needs.
  • Interact professionally with team members, internal departments, and subcontractors.

Job description

Working for the largest steel fabricator and erector in North America, our Schuff Steel world-class Estimators produce accurate, detail-oriented estimates on some of the most amazing structural projects in the world.

As a Senior Estimator at Schuff, you will work as part of a team of Estimators with leadership responsibilities. You will produce accurate, detail-oriented estimates on small and large projects with varying complexity. This will be accomplished through collaborative efforts with various Schuff Steel disciplines such as fabrication, purchasing, field erection, pre-construction, sub-fabrication and 3rd party vendors. Our Estimators provide the business with estimates that can be accurately interpreted and executed by our Project Management teams.

Key Performance Objectives
  • Review and analyze blueprints, specifications, schedules and other documentation presented by the client, to accurately prepare and estimate projects.
  • Work directly with Sales and Pre-construction teams to understand the size and scope of projects, along with timelines and applicable project deadlines.
  • Collaborate with others on how we want to build the job through fabrication and erection.
  • Adhere to and follow the Schuff Steel estimating guidelines and procedures.
  • Prepare detail-oriented and accurate estimates on new projects as well as any changes to orders on existing contracts, meeting assigned deadlines.
  • Prepare the takeoff of steel materials, estimate all necessary shop labor and field labor, buyout items, equipment cost, and subcontractor work, etc., to prepare a thorough estimate.
  • All estimated information shall be entered into our proprietary software for processing, summarized, and the results will be shared with appropriate leaders to ensure all aspects of the job are accounted for.
  • Be comfortable discussing alternative recommendations on projects in which management requires supplementary estimates to meet client needs.
  • Interact with other team members, internal departments, and subcontractors professionally.

Education/Training
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Degree in Construction Management, Civil/Structural Engineering or Business from an accredited college or university may substitute for three (3) YOE.
Work Experience
  • Seven to ten (7-10) YOE progressively estimating and bidding structural steel and heavy plate construction projects.
  • Five (5) or more YOE performing Lead Estimator responsibilities.
  • Proven experience as a construction or steel estimator, providing companies with accurate information that aids operations in achieving corporate goals.
Specialized Knowledge

As outlined in the Key Performance Objectives, an individual must have a thorough knowledge and an advanced understanding of each responsibility outlined above to carry out the essential functions of this position. Specialized Knowledge is also required in the following areas:

  • Thorough understanding of Structural steel and Architectural design drawings and details.
  • Comprehensive Steel construction terminology and concepts.
  • Knowledge of estimating software packages.
  • The ideal candidate should be very comfortable with numbers and analytical thought.
  • Great attention to detail, both written and verbal.
Software & Technology

Various office equipment is used, such as personal computers, scanners, and copiers. Proficient knowledge of latest and applications is required for this role; Windows operating system, Microsoft Office, Revu/Bluebeam, Plan Swift, Trimble Connect, and Tekla Structures.

Work Environment

The position requires as many hours as needed to fulfill the daily and weekly obligations required to carry out the responsibilities. Working long days, including evenings and weekends, can be required for this position. Work is generally performed in a climate-controlled office area. Limited travel may be required. Position requires ability to lift and carry items on occasion.
