Job summary

WSP USA is seeking a Senior Environmental Planner for our New England Planning and Advisory Services Team in Boston, MA. You will lead NEPA projects, prepare planning studies, and support multimodal transportation planning with GIS and stakeholder outreach.

Ideal candidates have 5–7 years of environmental planning experience, strong analytical skills, and knowledge of environmental laws. Occasional travel to NE offices may be required; master’s degree preferred.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Planning, Urban Planning, Geography, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • 5–7 years of environmental planning experience, fieldwork, permitting, and environmental surveys.
  • Strong analytical skills and experience with research methods.
  • Knowledge of environmental laws, permitting and regulatory frameworks.
  • Experience leading environmental reports, permit applications & licensing.
  • Ability to coordinate with clients and agencies; occasional travel.

  • Conduct corridor and subarea planning for multimodal transportation.

Your Impact
  • Serve as task lead or project manager for National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) projects, including CE, EA and EIS projects.
  • Prepare planning studies, technical reports, and/or NEPA documents for various federal/state transportation projects.
  • Conduct planning studies, corridor studies, and subarea planning studies for multimodal transportation projects (transit, highway, rail, airports, etc.) for variety of clients including municipalities, counties, MPOs, transit agencies, and DOTs.
  • Preparation and development of pre-NEPA, feasibility and supporting studies for environmental planning projects.
  • Lead tasks related to data collection, research, documentation, and technical analyses.
  • Experience with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for data analysis and map generation related to planning studies.
  • Assist with public outreach and stakeholder involvement related to planning and environmental studies.
  • Assist with business development including maintaining client relationships with internal and external clients, including transit agencies, cities, MPOs, and DOT clients.
  • Assist with preparation of scopes of work, fee proposals, and technical responses to RFPs.

Who You Are
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Planning, Urban Planning, Geography, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent experience.)
  • 5 to 7 years of experience working in the environmental planning field, completing environmental surveys, fieldwork, habitat and construction support, impact assessments, and permitting.
  • Highly proficient analytical skills, including experience with research techniques/assessment methodologies.
  • Expertise and experience with relevant environmental laws, permitting requirements, notification and compliance practices, and applicable Regional/State/Federal regulatory framework.
  • Demonstrated experience leading and reviewing environmental planning technical reports, environmental impact evaluations, siting reports, and environmental permit applications and licensing, including field surveys and reporting, and resource impact evaluations.
  • Established experience coordinating with clients, regulatory permitting and resource agencies, and environmental technical staff required.
  • Well-developed expertise with consulting practices, conducting NEPA and state equivalent compliance processes and documentation.
  • Highly proficient self-leadership and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to effectively, persuasively, and tactfully interact with employees at all levels of the organization.
  • Ability to work independently and provide guidance and leadership to junior team or project members, with strict adherence to QA/QC.
  • Experience with discipline-specific software (i.e., ArcGIS, MS Office Suite, Adobe Illustrator).
  • Proficiency with technical writing, office automation and communication software, technology, and tools.
  • Well-developed critical thinking and problem-solving skills required to reach conclusions from testing results, data collation, and identify the most effective solutions to accomplish objectives of assigned projects.
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP's health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
  • Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
  • Occasional travel may be required depending on project-specific requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree is preferred.
  • Essential Professional Licensure/Certification.

Compensation

Expected Salary (all locations): $77,100 - $135,000 WSP USA is providing the compensation range that the company in good faith believes it might pay and offer for this position, based on the successful applicant’s education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities in addition to internal equity and specific geographic location. WSP USA reserves the right to ultimately pay more or less than the posted range and offer additional benefits and other compensation, depending on circumstances not related to an applicant’s sex or other status protected by local, state, and/or federal law.
