Job summary

WM in the United States seeks a Senior Legal Counsel – Environmental, Health and Safety to provide proactive legal services on environmental, health and safety matters for the Company and its operations across the eastern United States.

The role requires a Juris Doctorate, State Bar licensure, and substantial experience in environmental law and litigation, with focus on CERCLA, RCRA, CAA/CWA; managing outside counsel and regulatory updates.

Qualifications

• Juris Doctorate from an accredited program.
• Eight years of relevant work experience (in addition to education).
• Seven+ years of Environmental, Health and Safety experience; experience with federal or state regulatory affairs.
• State Bar Licensure is required.
• Substantial litigation experience.
• Substantial environmental law experience.
• Familiarity with CERCLA, RCRA, CAA, CWA, and state analog regulations.
• Familiarity with OSHA and DOT is preferred.
• Must live and work in the U.S.

Responsibilities

• Provides legal and business advice/strategies regarding environmental, health, safety and other regulatory matters.
• Provides legal advice on environmental and safety enforcement matters.
• Manages the litigation risks of the Company within assigned cases and when called upon for specialized knowledge and expertise on cases assigned to others.
• Maintains both a detailed and a broad level of industry and Company knowledge as it pertains to current legal activities and potential issues.
• Advises management on recent changes in environmental, health and safety laws and regulations that affect the Company, and executes the implementation of improvements for the Company based on this knowledge.
• Obtains and manages the services of outside legal consultants/attorneys as required to complement available internal legal resources, in an efficient and cost-effective manner.
• Other minor duties as needed.
