About the Role

We are hiring an Engineering Manager to lead the engineering team that delivers the essential components of Ubuntu – system startup, compilers, language runtimes and toolchains, as well as networking and storage configuration and management. This is a fast‑paced, problem‑solving, highly technical role operating at the core of Linux server systems.

Globally remote

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and grow a distributed team of engineers
  • Demonstrate sound engineering principles through active, hands‑on leadership
  • Plan, estimate and execute engineering work
  • Work with product management to define the vision and strategy for Ubuntu
  • Collaborate with cross‑functional leadership teams
  • Drive the advancement and adoption of the latest software development practices
  • Design, embrace and evangelise great engineering and organizational practices
  • Grow a healthy, collaborative engineering culture in line with company values
  • Engage with other Canonical teams to ensure alignment on product architecture and roadmaps
  • Work from home while participating in twice‑yearly in‑person sprints (1–2 weeks each)
Qualifications
  • Extensive experience with Linux distributions and packaging technologies (deb, rpm, etc.)
  • Proven experience managing or leading a team of software engineers
  • High‑quality software engineering knowledge in at least one of: Linux system architecture, boot process, Java, GCC, Python, Rust, Go toolchains, ARM or RISC‑V
  • Engagement with open‑source communities and processes
