Job description

About Upstart

At Upstart, we’re united by a mission that matters: to radically reduce the cost and complexity of borrowing for all Americans. Every day, we bring creativity, experimentation, and advanced AI to reshape access to credit, helping millions move forward financially with clarity and confidence.

As the leading AI lending marketplace, we partner with banks and credit unions to expand access to affordable credit through technology that’s both radically intelligent and deeply human. Our platform runs over one million predictions per borrower using more than 3,000 signals, powering smarter, fairer decisions for millions of customers. But the numbers only hint at the impact. Every idea, every voice, and every contribution moves us closer to a world where credit never stands between people and their financial progress.

We’re proudly digital-first, giving most Upstarters the flexibility to do their best work from wherever they thrive, alongside teammates across 80+ cities in the US and Canada. Digital-first doesn’t mean distant. We’re intentional about in-person connection through team onsites, planning sessions, and moments that spark creativity and trust. And whether you choose to work primarily from home or collaborate in-person from one of our offices in Columbus, Austin, the Bay Area, or New York City, you’ll have the support to work in the way that works best for you.

If you’re energized by tackling meaningful problems, excited to innovate with purpose, and motivated by work that truly matters, we’d love to hear from you.

The Team

Upstart’s Servicing teams play a critical role in supporting our borrowers throughout the life of their loan. They are responsible for helping ensure every borrower has a smooth, transparent, and empathetic experience—from the moment their loan is funded through final repayment.

Servicing also plays an important role in Upstart’s financial performance. By proactively preventing delinquency, managing operational costs, and continuously improving our servicing platform, they help protect both our borrowers and the business. This is where empathy meets execution—and where every interaction is an opportunity to build trust.

As the Senior Engineering Manager at Upstart, you will lead a team of 12+ engineers across two engineering squads, partnering closely with Product, Risk, and Operations to translate business needs into resilient, scalable technical solutions. This role reports to a Senior Director of Engineering and focuses on driving architectural clarity, developing high-performing teams, and building systems that balance speed, reliability, and compliance.

How you’ll make an impact
  • Lead and develop multiple engineering teams responsible for critical Servicing products.
  • Define and execute multi-quarter technical and engineering strategies aligned with Servicing and company priorities.
  • Partner with Product and cross-functional leaders to translate borrower and business needs into scalable technical solutions.
  • Drive architectural clarity and justified technical decisioning across complex systems.
  • Build a culture of ownership, execution, collaboration, and operational excellence.
  • Hire, coach, and develop engineers and emerging engineering leaders
  • Establish clear visibility into technical priorities, delivery risks, trade-offs, and roadmap execution.
Minimum Qualifications
  • 10–15 years of software engineering experience, with 4–7 years in engineering management roles.
  • Deep technical expertise in distributed systems, APIs, and systems design.
  • Proven experience leading teams in regulated domains such as fintech, payments, or lending.
  • Demonstrated ability to define and deliver complex technical strategies that align with business goals.
  • Strong track record of building high-performing teams and mentoring engineering leaders.
  • Excellent communication and cross-functional collaboration skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience building technology in fintech, lending, payments, servicing, or another regulated environment.
  • 7+ years of engineering management experience.
  • Experience leading both product and platform-oriented engineering teams.
  • Strong product judgment and the ability to connect technical decisions to business outcomes.
  • Experience modernizing or evolving complex technical platforms while continuing to deliver customer-facing features.
  • Experience partnering closely with Product, Design, Operations, Risk, or other business functions.
  • Familiarity with applying AI or automation to customer experiences, internal workflows, or operational systems.
