Job summary

Lyft is seeking a Senior Engineering Manager for the Luxury team, responsible for leading app experiences, UIs, and infrastructure for Black and upmarket modes. You will set technical direction across backend, frontend, iOS, and Android, driving cross-functional alignment and engineering excellence to elevate the luxury experience.

You will mentor engineers, shape product direction, and collaborate with product, data science, design, and operations to deliver impactful results.

Qualifications

  • 3+ years of experience managing engineering teams of 20+ members, including managers.
  • Experience growing managers and staff engineers.
  • Ability to think ahead and build scalable teams and products.
  • Proven track record of delivering through collaborative cross-functional partnerships.

Responsibilities

  • Lead backend, frontend, and mobile engineers and engineering managers to ship high-quality solutions.
  • Mentor the professional and technical development of team members and assign projects accordingly.
  • Build collaborative, inclusive teams with strong ownership and accountability.
  • Set the technical vision and strategy for an evolving product area.
  • Co-own the product strategy with product partners and ensure timely delivery of engineering solutions.

The Luxury team builds rich and creative features that set the standard for the ride-sharing industry. We're looking for a motivated Senior Engineering Manager to lead the team building app experiences, UIs, and infrastructure for Black, Black SUV, and other upmarket modes where quality is uncompromising.

As a Senior Engineering Manager, you'll set the technical direction for the team, making tradeoffs between technical investments and product work, and communicating strategy transparently to your team and to leadership. You'll act as a critical technical leader across backend, frontend, iOS, and Android, taking holistic ownership of complex systems, defining strategic roadmaps, and driving cross-functional alignment and engineering excellence to improve the luxury experience.

Ownership is a key quality for this team. You should be driven to track projects to successful completion and beyond, taking initiative to work with other teams and functions to ensure your team's work reaches users and drives impact. You'll also help shape product direction by developing a deep understanding of the customer.

You'll lead a group of talented engineers, helping the team deliver business impact while staying open to change through constant experimentation. You'll collaborate with engineering, product, data science, design, and operations on programs that empower the team to iterate quickly, delighting our passengers and drivers.

Responsibilities:
  • Lead a team of talented backend, frontend, and mobile engineers and engineering managers who like to ship code and tackle hard engineering problems
  • Mentor and guide the professional and technical development of your team members. Help develop their careers, and assign them to projects tailored to their skill levels, personalities, work styles, and professional goals
  • Build teams that are collaborative, inclusive, and respectful of each other
  • Set the technical vision and strategy for an evolving product area
  • Co-own the product strategy with the product partner and ensure timely delivery with high quality of the engineering solutions
  • Create plans for prioritizing technical and resource challenges in your organization
  • Maintain a balance between building sustainable, high-impact projects and shipping things quickly
  • Instill a spirit of continuous improvement in the team's code, architecture, and processes
  • Work closely with the Lyft recruiting team to hire high potential candidates from diverse backgrounds
  • Own your team's deliverables and ensure we continue to ship scalable, highly-available products that delight our users
Experience:
  • You have 3+ years of experience managing engineering teams of 20+ members, as well as experience in managing managers. Able to contribute to planning and design discussions
  • You have experience building trust to lead a team of engineers and guiding them through their career development, including growing managers and staff engineers
  • You believe in building both teams and products that scale. You think ahead and build for the future
  • You enjoy working in a collaborative environment, and you're committed to driving projects to completion creatively
  • You can motivate and instill a strong sense of ownership in your teamYou are able to thrive in a heavily cross-functional environment and drive projects to completion regardless of the organizational structure
  • You work well with product partners and help set the product vision for an ambiguous project

The expected base pay range for this position in the San Francisco area is $208,000 - $280,000, not inclusive of potential equity offering, bonus or benefits. Salary ranges are dependent on a variety of factors, including qualifications, experience and geographic location.
