Engineering11 is building a new way for software teams to build and operate software at AI speed and volume. Our products — Full Stack Foundation, Foundry, and Alloy — combine a production-ready software foundation, AI agents and workflows, and a continuously maintained engineering knowledge corpus. We use these products ourselves to build custom software for customers, while also making them available to other engineering teams.
We are looking for a Senior Engineering Manager, Engineering Practice to help us scale how engineering works across the company.
This is not a traditional engineering manager role built around managing one team of eight or nine engineers. You will operate across our customer software and product engineering organizations, with your primary day-to-day focus on Custom Software Development. You will directly manage engineers working in customer and product pods, including engineers from our offshore development partner, other contractors, and future Engineering11 hires.
You will own much of the operating system behind our engineering organization: how pods are staffed, how engineering capacity is allocated, how commitments are understood, how engineers are developed and evaluated, and how our external engineering partners operate as an extension of Engineering11.
You will work closely with our Principal Engineers, product leadership, delivery leadership, UX, Quality Engineering, and Platform Ops. Our Principals own technical direction in their areas; this role owns the engineering practice and helps make sure the people, pods, capacity, and management systems around that work are strong.
You will also play a key role in defining Engineering11's AI Development Life Cycle (AIDLC) — how AI changes the traditional software development life cycle from planning and architecture through implementation, testing, review, deployment, and ongoing maintenance. This role will help turn emerging AI-enabled engineering practices into a repeatable operating model for our teams.
Engineering11 is also customer zero for its own products. This role will make sure our engineers use our products on every release, build real expertise with them, and feed what they learn back into the products.
This is a highly visible role with an opportunity to help shape how a modern engineering organization operates as AI fundamentally changes software development.
Qualifications
- Significant software engineering experience, including a strong technical foundation before moving into engineering management.
- Several years of engineering leadership experience with direct responsibility for software engineers.
- Experience managing multiple teams, pods, or concurrent engineering workstreams.
- Experience managing distributed, offshore, nearshore, contractor, or external development teams.
- Strong understanding of engineering capacity planning, staffing, commitments, and workload management.
- Demonstrated ability to evaluate engineer performance, provide direct feedback, coach engineers, and address performance issues.
- Experience hiring, onboarding, developing, and retaining software engineers.
- Strong enough technically to understand the work, participate credibly in engineering discussions, and recognize technical or organizational problems without needing to be the architect for every solution.
- Ability to operate effectively in a small, fast-moving organization where leaders are expected to be hands‑on and own problems end to end.
- Strong communication, organization, judgment, and follow‑through.
Especially valuable experience:
- Experience spanning both product engineering and customer-facing or custom software development.
- Experience building or improving an engineering management practice rather than simply inheriting an established one.
- Experience working closely with senior technical leaders such as Staff or Principal Engineers.
- Experience managing a strategic offshore development partner, including staffing, performance, escalation, and capacity planning.
- Experience experimenting with or implementing AI-assisted software development workflows, coding agents, or AI-enabled engineering practices.
- Interest in helping define how the traditional SDLC evolves into an AI-enabled development life cycle.
Responsibilities
Engineering people leadership
- Directly manage engineers assigned across customer and product pods, including offshore partner engineers, contractors, and Engineering11 employees.
- Set clear expectations for engineering performance and provide regular coaching and feedback.
- Own performance management, career development, onboarding, and ongoing engineer development.
- Help build an engineering culture with high accountability, strong technical standards, and low unnecessary process.
Pod operations and capacity
- Act as the operational owner of the engineering pod model across Engineering11.
- Understand the commitments, capacity, skills, and workload of each pod.
- Work with engineering, product, and delivery leaders to form pods and put the right engineers against the right work.
- Manage the natural ebbs and flows of customer and product work, including moving or adding engineering capacity as priorities change.
- Identify upcoming capacity constraints, skill gaps, and staffing needs before they become delivery problems.
- Maintain visibility into engineering capacity across Custom Software Development, Full Stack Foundation, Alloy, Foundry, and other product initiatives.
Offshore partner management
- Own the day-to-day engineering relationship with our offshore development partner.
- Work with the partner on staffing requests, engineer selection, onboarding, performance, replacements, escalations, and capacity planning.
- Know the individual engineers working with Engineering11 and continually improve the strength and composition of the team.
- Ensure partner engineers operate as an extension of Engineering11 rather than as a disconnected external development team.
Engineering practice
- Develop and continuously improve the Engineering11 engineering management practice.
- Establish useful engineering metrics and visibility into team and individual performance without creating unnecessary ceremony.
- Create consistent approaches to hiring, onboarding, expectations, feedback, career development, and performance management.
- Partner with Principal Engineers to improve engineering effectiveness while preserving clear technical ownership within each practice area.
- Help define and operationalize Engineering11's AI Development Life Cycle (AIDLC), including how AI changes planning, architecture, implementation, code review, testing, QA, deployment, documentation, and maintenance.
- Identify where AI can improve engineering throughput and quality, and where human review, technical judgment, and controls remain essential.
- Work with Principal Engineers and product leadership to turn successful AI-assisted development patterns into repeatable practices across customer and product pods.
- Establish practical ways to measure the impact of AI on engineering productivity, quality, cycle time, and team capacity.
Customer zero and tool adoption
- Ensure engineers across all areas use Engineering11's own products (Full Stack Foundation, Foundry, and Alloy) as customer zero for every release.
- Drive deep expertise with our tools across the engineering organization and set the expectation that engineers work the way our products are designed to be used.
- Collect and deliver structured feedback from engineers to product leadership so real usage shapes the roadmap.
- Drive rollouts of new releases to the engineering organization, including release communication, adoption, and follow-through.
- Own training and onboarding on our tools and engineering practices for all engineers, including offshore partner engineers and contractors.
Custom Software Development
- Spend a significant portion of your time supporting the engineering organization building custom software for Engineering11 customers.
- Work closely with Customer Engineering and delivery leadership to ensure customer teams have the capacity, skills, and support required to meet commitments.
- Help scale Customer Engineering as Engineering11 adds additional customers and concurrent software projects.
