Position Summary
GEICO is seeking an experienced Senior Engineer with a passion for working full stack and building high-performance, low‑maintenance, and highly available platforms and web applications. You will lead by example to drive our technology and insurance business transformation as we transition from a traditional IT model to a tech organization with engineering excellence as its mission, while co‑creating the culture of psychological safety and continuous improvement.
Position Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and deliver end‑to‑end features: scalable backend systems, performant APIs, data pipelines, and responsive web UIs.
- Own quality and reliability across the stack, implementing automated testing and observability for both frontend and backend components.
- Mentor and coach engineers to strengthen the technical expertise and know‑how of our engineering and product community.
- Champion continuous improvement and consistently share best practices within and across teams.
- Build product definition and leverage your technical skills to drive towards the right solution.
- Engage in cross‑functional collaboration throughout the entire software lifecycle.
- Lead design sessions and code reviews with peers to elevate the quality of engineering across the organization.
- Define, create, and support reusable application components/patterns from a business and technology perspective.
Required Qualifications
- Deep hands‑on professional experience designing, building, and operating scalable backend and data‑intensive systems with an emphasis on performance.
- Experience designing and building modern single‑page applications (React, Angular, Vue).
- Fluency in at least one of Golang, Python, Java, C++ as well as JavaScript / TypeScript.
- Strong CS fundamentals (data structures, algorithms, complexity analysis).
- Experience with Docker and Kubernetes (containerization, orchestration, deployment).
- Understanding of open‑source relational databases (MySQL, PostgreSQL, etc.) or NoSQL column stores (Cassandra, MongoDB, Elasticsearch, etc.).
- Ownership of continuous integration and delivery pipelines (CI/CD) and Infrastructure‑as‑Code workflows (Terraform).
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills – comfortable leading projects and presenting solutions to clients and sponsors on a regular basis.
Preferred Qualifications
- Hands‑on experience building microservice architectures and REST/gRPC APIs in production.
- Production experience with event‑streaming and big‑data stacks (Kafka, Lambda, Flink, Spark).
- Familiarity with observability stacks (Grafana, OpenTelemetry, Prometheus) and SRE practices.
- Knowledge of developer productivity tooling across the software development life cycle (task management, automated testing, GitHub Actions, real‑time communication).
- Familiarity with design systems, single‑page application optimizations, and web testing.
- Previous contributions to open‑source projects, tech talks, or technical blogs.
Experience
- 4+ years of professional experience with production software systems, including software development, platform architecture, infrastructure management, data governance, web UIs, and network operations.
- 3+ years of experience with the architecture and design of distributed solutions (microservices, event‑driven, or data‑intensive).
- 3+ years of hands‑on experience with public cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure) and hybrid cloud environments.
- 2+ years of experience with open‑source frameworks / libraries.
Education
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or equivalent education or work experience.
Annual Salary
$105,000.00 – $215,000.00. The above annual salary range is a general guideline. Multiple factors are taken into consideration to arrive at the final hourly rate/annual salary to be offered to the selected candidate. Factors include, but are not limited to, the scope and responsibilities of the role, the selected candidate’s work experience, education and training, the work location as well as market and business considerations.
