Job summary

Medela is seeking a Senior Embedded Software Engineer to join our R&D team in a hybrid role (3 days onsite in McHenry, IL). You will develop embedded software for medical devices using C, C++, and Python, guiding architecture and cross-functional integration with hardware.

The role requires 6+ years of device-focused experience, and a strong background in software lifecycle, tests, and regulatory compliance.

Qualifications

  • 6+ years of embedded software development experience in medical devices.
  • Strong C/C++ programming skills and Python exposure.
  • Experience with microprocessors, RTOS and embedded systems.
  • Familiarity with SPI, I2C, RS232/RS485 and related protocols.
  • Experience with CI/CD, Git/Azure DevOps and testing.
  • Understanding of IEC 62304 and ISO 14971 is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Develop embedded software for medical devices using C, C++, and Python.
  • Translate requirements into software architecture and implementation.
  • Integrate software with hardware and EC systems; drive testing and traceability.
  • Lead code reviews and promote best practices across the team.
  • Support CI/CD, verification, validation, and lab debugging.

Medela is looking for an experienced Senior Embedded Software Engineer to join our Research & Development team and contribute to the development of innovative medical devices and related products.

This is a hands-on senior embedded software engineering role for an engineer who has experience developing complex software for medical devices and electromechanical systems. You will serve as a technical resource and subject matter expert while helping guide software architecture, development, integration, verification, and best practices across the engineering team.

This is NOT a general software, web, or application development position.

We are specifically seeking candidates with 6+ years of experience designing and implementing complex embedded software for medical devices.

What You'll Do
  • Develop embedded software for medical devices using C, C++, and Python
  • Serve as a technical expert for key embedded software features
  • Translate product requirements into software requirements, architecture, and implementation
  • Integrate software with microprocessor-based hardware and electromechanical systems
  • Collaborate with electrical and mechanical engineers on hardware/software integration
  • Conduct code reviews and promote software development best practices
  • Develop and support unit, integration, system, and automated testing
  • Support CI/CD, verification, validation, requirements, and traceability
  • Troubleshoot complex technical issues using hardware and laboratory debugging tools
  • Provide technical guidance and feedback to other software engineers
  • Work collaboratively with global, cross-functional engineering teams
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Software, Computer, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related field
  • 6+ years of professional embedded software development experience
  • Medical device software development experience
  • Strong C/C++ programming skills; Python experience
  • Experience with microprocessors, RTOS, and embedded systems
  • Experience with communication protocols such as SPI, I2C, RS232, or RS485
  • Experience with tools such as Git, Azure DevOps, IAR, or similar
  • Experience with automated testing and CI/CD
  • Experience debugging hardware/software integration using laboratory tools
  • Understanding of the medical device software lifecycle, design controls, verification, and traceability
  • Knowledge of medical device standards such as IEC 62304 and ISO 14971
  • Strong analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with STM development environments or TouchGFX
  • Experience with Altium or schematic review
  • Experience with Bash, PowerShell, or YAML
  • Experience working with global product development teams
