Job summary

Johnson Controls, Inc. is seeking a Staff Software Engineer, Embedded Networking, to extend Airwall to new devices and modernize the secure data path. You will work on constrained targets and ARM/OpenWRT platforms, strengthening our OT security posture while delivering high-quality, maintainable code.

You will mentor engineers and collaborate with product teams to ensure robust, scalable solutions in a remote-friendly environment within the US.

Qualifications

• 8+ years shipping production networking software, with embedded or kernel-adjacent systems
• Proficiency in C, C++, or Rust across projects
• Hands-on embedded Linux on resource-constrained hardware or OpenWRT
• Experience with encrypted transport such as IPsec/ESP/IKE and PKI
• Strong communication and collaboration across product and engineering teams

Responsibilities

• Extend Airwall onto new device classes and hardware targets
• Own embedded software on constrained targets including OpenWRT and ARM-based platforms
• Work in the secure data path: identity-based overlay networking, IPsec/ESP/IKE, PKI
• Modernize the Airwall stack and improve performance, observability, and maintainability
• Diagnose networking failures in live customer environments down to packet level
