Job summary

Iris Scientific is seeking a Senior Embedded Firmware Engineer for laser systems R&D near Baltimore, MD. You will own the embedded software for fiber laser systems, handling bare-metal and RTOS firmware on microcontrollers that control real photonics hardware.

The role emphasizes firmware depth, with one junior engineer reporting to you. You’ll join a growing team in a lab environment with on-site work four days a week and one day WFH, relocation support available.

Qualifications

BS in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or Computer Science (MS a plus)
5+ years of hands-on firmware development experience
Bare-metal and RTOS firmware development in C/C++ for microcontroller-based instruments
Genuine hardware fluency and ability to read schematics
Lab-bench debugging with oscilloscopes & analyzers
Firmware for instruments and systems: scientific/industrial/medical equipment
Sound software engineering practices: version control & structured releases

Responsibilities

Design and develop bare-metal and RTOS firmware for microcontroller-based laser systems
Bring up new boards in the lab: flash, probe, debug, and validate firmware
Work with electrical and laser engineers on hardware/firmware interactions
Own firmware architecture across multiple product programs
Mentor a junior software engineer and shape engineering practices
Support products through NPI into production, including test and manufacturing support
Contribute to GUI/application software as needed
