Job summary

HDR is seeking a qualified Senior Electrical Engineer located in Tacoma, Washington, to support natural gas and renewable energy generation projects. In this role, you will lead teams for utility-scale power generation design projects and act as Owner’s Engineer/Advisor.

The ideal candidate should have a Bachelor's degree in Engineering, a minimum of 10 years' experience in the power market sector, and a Professional Engineer (PE) license. The position offers a comprehensive benefits package including health coverage, paid time off, and retirement savings.

Job Overview

HDR is seeking a qualified Senior Electrical Engineer to support natural gas and renewable energy generation projects and serve as Owner’s Engineer and/or Advisor.

Responsibilities

• Lead teams for utility‑scale power generation design projects, including traditional Owner’s Engineering roles.
• Design power generation and distribution systems, protection and motor control, power system studies, construction and equipment specification development.
• Develop balance‑of‑plant designs such as raceway, lighting, and grounding systems.
• Mentor junior engineers, manage client relationships, and lead marketing activities including proposal technical writing, fee builds, and work breakdown structure development.
• Perform design and engineer‑of‑record work for power plant systems.
• Coordinate project reviews with Project Manager, Project Controller, and management.
• Act as a mentor to other staff members as needed.
• Travel to client meetings and project sites (expected <10%).

Mandatory Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering.
• Minimum of 10 years of experience in power market sector project execution.
• Professional Engineer (PE or P.Eng) license.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office and standard Power Market Sector design software (e.g., PLS CAD, AutoCAD, Plant 3D, AutoPipe, Revit).

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited program with an Electrical Power emphasis.
• Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or Control Systems Engineering with an Electrical Power emphasis.
• Minimum 15 years of experience in electrical power generation design.
• Design experience with simple‑cycle and combined‑cycle power generation.
• Previous experience with an engineering power consulting or EPC firm.
• Excellent communication, written and organizational skills.
• Strong leadership skills, able to work independently or lead multi‑discipline or small teams.
• Extensive knowledge of three‑phase electrical power, protection and control design, system grounding, and life safety systems.
