Job description

Are you an experienced Electrical Engineer who thinks in systems — architectures, requirements, and interfaces — and enjoys defining the design intent that others build to? Join our engineering team at Mi-Jack Products as a Senior Electrical Engineer, Systems, defining and integrating the electrical control systems that power our cranes and material-handling equipment.

Mi-Jack designs and builds heavy, field-deployed material-handling equipment — including rubber-tired and rail-mounted gantry cranes used in intermodal and industrial operations. In this role you'll own the electrical system definition for complex, ruggedized machines: establishing requirements, guiding implementation across CAD, controls, and mechanical teams, and ensuring robust, compliant solutions from concept through field support.

This is a system-level architecture and requirements role — not a detailed schematic, PCB, or panel-drawing position. You'll define design intent and performance requirements, then guide and collaborate with CAD, controls and supplier teams to produce the detailed designs.

What You'll Do
  • Define high and low voltage electrical system architectures and system-level requirements — functional descriptions, interface definitions, and performance expectations for complex, heavy equipment.
  • Translate system requirements into clear design criteria for downstream teams: high and low voltage power distribution, control panels, harnessing, and device integration.
  • Guide CAD design teams by specifying layout intent, constraints, and requirements (clearances, serviceability, environmental and outdoor exposure), and review deliverables for compliance to system intent.
  • Provide electrical system-level direction to controls/software teams — control strategies, I/O requirements, sequencing intent, and functional behavior — without direct code development.
  • Perform electrical analysis including load calculations, cable sizing, and derating to validate system performance against requirements.
  • Apply industry codes and standards at the system level to ensure compliance, safety, and regulatory conformance.
  • Support system integration, testing, and debugging across electrical, controls, and mechanical interfaces.
  • Develop and maintain technical documentation — system descriptions, requirements, and design-intent documentation.
  • Drive improvements in system design, integration practices, and engineering processes to improve reliability and efficiency.
  • Support troubleshooting and root-cause analysis for system-level issues across development, manufacturing, and field environments.
What We're Looking For
  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience owning the electrical system definition for complex equipment or industrial machinery — we weigh system-level ownership more heavily than years on the job.
  • Experience with heavy, mobile, or off-highway equipment — cranes, port/rail, construction, agricultural, or similar ruggedized field-deployed machines. (Strongly preferred; this is the environment you'll design for.)
  • Working knowledge of electrical CAD platforms (e.g., AutoCAD Electrical, EPLAN) sufficient to define requirements and review outputs — not to generate detailed drawings.
  • Experience with high and low voltage AC and DC vehicle/machine electrical systems, batteries, alternators, and engine/genset interfaces.
  • Experience performing electrical calculations including load analysis, cable sizing, and derating.
  • Demonstrated ability to support system integration, validation, and troubleshooting.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience interfacing with controls/PLC teams in an industrial environment (we run Beckhoff).
  • Familiarity with applicable electrical codes and standards (e.g., NEC, UL).
  • Familiarity with motor drives / VFDs for hoist, trolley, and gantry motions.
  • Machine functional-safety experience (ISO 13849, IEC 62061).
You’ll Thrive Here If You Have
  • Strong system-level thinking — the ability to translate functional requirements into implementable designs.
  • A high degree of independence and ownership while working within defined system architectures.
  • Effective collaboration across engineering disciplines, with the ability to guide and influence without direct authority.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, particularly in system integration and troubleshooting.
  • Attention to detail, adherence to standards, and consistent delivery of high-quality work.
  • The ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
  • A proactive mindset focused on identifying and implementing improvements.

This role is primarily office-based in a professional engineering environment, with occasional work in offsite and outdoor settings. Approximately 10% domestic and international travel is expected.
