Job summary

Metra is seeking an Electrical Engineer to design and oversee electrical power distribution systems for railroad operations, including DC traction power. You will manage consultants, prepare design packages, and ensure compliance with NFPA and NEC standards.

Responsibilities include contract administration, bid documents, and coordination with multiple departments and railroads. A Bachelor’s degree and 8+ years’ experience are required, with travel and a valid driver’s license.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited college or university.
• Minimum 8 years of experience including electrical power distribution design and project management.
• Experience in railroad engineering projects; DC traction power preferred.
• Strong knowledge of electrical engineering principles, systems, and equipment.
• Proficient in AutoCAD or Microstation and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
• Knowledge of NEC, Chicago Building Code, NFPA.
• Ability to manage multiple tasks in a demanding environment.
• Ability to deliver presentations and work with various departments and agencies.
• Willing to travel within and outside Metra’s 6-county region.
• Must have a driver's license and be able to operate a vehicle.
• Physical ability to lift up to 20 pounds.
• Good verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to lead projects (team leader) or work independently.
• Strong analytical, math, organizational and problem-solving skills.

Responsibilities

• Manage consultants, develop schedules, lead meetings, monitor tasks and site progress.
• Prepare design packages including drawings, specifications, cost estimates, and technical calculations for power distribution projects and signaling equipment; ensure compliance with NFPA, NEC, and Chicago Building Code.
• Prepare contract documents to solicit projects for bid; participate in pre-bid meetings; review vendor bid proposals for compliance and cost effectiveness; recommend contract awards.
• Perform contract administration duties including reviewing invoices, evaluating change orders, and approving payments.
• Maintain contract files and prepare detailed project status reports; coordinate team day-to-day activities and provide guidance and training.
• Promote safe work practices and maintain a safe work environment in various conditions.
• Incumbents may work indoors and outdoors under varying weather; travel as required.
