Job description

Senior Electrical Engineer — Medium Voltage Switchgear

Greater Phoenix, AZ or Greater Houston, TX | Hybrid Opportunities

Bring your switchgear expertise to a growing engineering team—and help shape how it operates.

Power Careers LLC is recruiting a Senior Electrical Engineer for a capital-backed manufacturer of custom power-distribution equipment serving data centers, utilities, and industrial customers.

If your background includes medium-voltage switchgear, UL 891 switchboards, or UL 1558 low-voltage switchgear, this opportunity offers a chance to apply that experience to complex customer projects while helping develop a growing medium-voltage engineering team.

The opportunity

You will apply established switchgear platforms to customer-specific requirements, translating specifications into coordinated equipment configurations and accurate documentation for manufacturing.

The technical environment includes metal-clad and metal-enclosed MV switchgear, draw-out vacuum circuit breakers, CTs/PTs, protective relaying, breaker control circuits, and bus systems.

The immediate focus is engineered-to-order equipment, with opportunities to strengthen design practices, organize established product capabilities and type-test information, and mentor developing engineers.

What you’ll contribute

  • Review customer specifications, single-line diagrams, and project requirements to develop order‑specific switchgear configurations.
  • Prepare or review electrical schematics, three‑line diagrams, wiring diagrams, component selections, and bills of material.
  • Coordinate breaker controls, CT/PT interfaces, protective relaying, interlocks, and auxiliary circuits with mechanical engineering and project teams.
  • Evaluate equipment configurations against applicable ANSI/IEEE C37 standards, listing scope, and available type‑test information.
  • Help ensure customer modifications remain within established product design and certification boundaries.
  • Support manufacturing and testing teams with technical clarifications and resolution of order‑specific issues.
  • Strengthen peer reviews, documentation quality, and controlled engineering releases.
  • Help organize reusable technical information and mentor less experienced engineers.

What makes you a strong candidate

  • Substantial hands‑on experience engineering switchgear, switchboards, or closely related power‑distribution equipment.
  • Experience translating customer requirements into equipment drawings, configurations, and manufacturing deliverables.
  • Practical understanding of breaker control wiring, CTs/PTs, protection interfaces, electrical interlocks, and component integration.
  • Familiarity with relevant equipment standards, which may include:
  • ANSI/IEEE C37.20.2: Metal‑clad medium‑voltage switchgear.
  • ANSI/IEEE C37.20.3: Metal‑enclosed interrupter switchgear.
  • UL 891: Dead‑front switchboards.
  • UL 1558: Metal‑enclosed low‑voltage power circuit breaker switchgear.
  • Understanding of equipment voltage and current ratings, interrupting and withstand ratings, grounding, and electrical clearances.
  • Proficiency with relevant electrical CAD and engineering documentation tools.
  • Sound technical judgment, clear communication, and an interest in helping a team develop.

Medium‑voltage experience is preferred. Strong engineers with UL 891 and/or UL 1558 equipment experience who want to expand into MV are also encouraged to apply. Experience across every standard listed is not required. Electrical engineering education or a comparable technical background is valuable.

The primary focus is customer‑order engineering and equipment execution. Candidates should enjoy practical design decisions, manufacturing collaboration, and improving processes while delivering current projects.

Why consider this role?

  • Technical influence: Help shape engineering practices and standards as the team develops.
  • Growth potential: Opportunities to earn broader technical, lead, or management responsibilities.
  • Business investment: Join a manufacturer expanding its engineering capabilities and planning additional production capacity.
  • Hybrid flexibility: A combination of office collaboration, time on site as required, and working from home. The specific schedule will be agreed with engineering leadership.
  • Negotiable compensation: Salary packages are completely negotiable based on years of experience, technical expertise, and agreed responsibilities.
  • Benefits: Medical, dental, vision, a 401(k) with employer match, paid time off, and paid holidays. Eligibility and current plan details will be discussed during the interview process.
