Job description

The Senior Electrical Engineer reports to the Engineering department leader and joins our Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) engineering team, responsible for the design, analysis, validation, and deployment of advanced energy storage systems with a strong focus on electrical power systems, control systems, safety compliance, and manufacturing execution.

You will work cross-functionally with engineering, manufacturing, quality, and operations teams to deliver safe, reliable, and scalable energy storage solutions. Work is primarily based in the Waterbury, Vermont office, with travel to production facilities and customer sites as needed. NOMAD offers a competitive salary with performance-based incentives, comprehensive medical, dental, and vision benefits, a 401(k) with company match, and professional development opportunities.

The following skills, experience, and credentials are what we think are necessary to succeed in this position. If you possess many but not all of these, you are encouraged to apply anyway because you may possess additional skills and experience that could provide value to NOMAD and our customers in ways we have not imagined.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Lead the design and development of electrical architectures for utility-scale and commercial Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS).
  • Design AC and DC power distribution systems, including high-voltage battery systems, switchgear, protection devices, transformers, and auxiliary power systems.
  • Develop conceptual layouts and single-line diagrams for customer-specific applications in accordance with project technical requirements.
  • Develop detailed electrical schematics, one-line diagrams, wiring diagrams, panel layouts, and system interconnection drawings.
  • Design equipment power systems and ensure compliance with all applicable electrical codes and standards.
  • Design and specify control system hardware architectures for energy storage applications, and develop network communication architectures utilizing industrial Ethernet and Modbus protocols.
  • Coordinate integration of Process Control Systems (PLC-based or embedded control), HMIs, SCADA systems, and battery management systems (BMS).
  • Perform electrical studies including bolted fault current calculations, short-circuit analysis, protective device coordination studies, and load flow analysis.
  • Conduct NFPA 70E Arc Flash Hazard Analysis and develop mitigation strategies.
  • Support system commissioning, troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and corrective action implementation.
  • Ensure designs comply with applicable industry standards and certifications, including NFPA 70 (NEC), NFPA 79, UL 9540, and UL 508A, and support product certification efforts and interactions with testing laboratories, inspectors, and AHJs.
