Job summary

Urban Sky in Denver, CO is seeking an Electrical Engineer to lead the design, development, and testing of high-altitude balloon electrical systems.

You will own battery integration, PCB design, and QA planning, while mentoring junior engineers and coordinating with mechanical and firmware teams in a fast-paced aerospace startup.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field.
• 5-8 years of experience in electrical system design, prototyping, and testing.
• Proficiency with PCB design tools (e.g., Altium).
• Strong understanding of analog and digital circuit design.
• Experience with lab equipment (oscilloscopes, power supplies, spectrum analyzers, etc.).
• Excellent problem-solving and communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Lead design, development, and testing of electrical systems for high-altitude balloons.
• Custom battery pack development, BMS design, and UN testing.
• Take ownership of PCB design, schematic capture, layout reviews, and vendor interactions.
• Develop and execute comprehensive test plans to validate hardware performance and reliability.
• Guide hands-on build-up and modification of boards for rapid iteration and prototyping.
• Oversee integration of electrical systems with mechanical and firmware subsystems.
• Troubleshoot and resolve electrical issues across development, integration, and flight operations.
• Document designs, processes, and results to maintain traceability and knowledge sharing.
• Provide mentorship and technical guidance to junior engineers.

We design, build, operate, and sell stratospheric balloon systems. The data we collect supports a wide range of applications, from real-time wildfire monitoring to urban mapping. Key Responsibilities:

Nice-to-Haves / Preferred Skills:

• Experience with aerospace or high-reliability systems.
• Experience managing RF interference and cross-talk between electronic subsystems.
• Experience with battery pack design, integration, and management systems (e.g., BQ configuration).
• Experience with environmental testing (thermal, vibration, vacuum, etc.).
• Background in rapid prototyping and small-team hardware development.
• Familiarity with embedded systems, firmware development, or FPGA programming.
