Job summary

Smith+ Nephew's Arthroscopic Enabling Technologies division in Andover, MA, is seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer to contribute to medical device hardware design, including digital image acquisition, processing, and high‑speed digital electronics for surgical applications.   • Minimum BSc in Electrical or Computer Engineering.
  • 5+ years of experience in high-speed board design and taking products from inception to launch.
  • Experience in cross-functional teams of electrical, software, systems, and mechanical engineers.
  • Hands-on troubleshooting and data-driven decision making.
  • Experience with lab equipment and debugging tools.
  • Experience with design controls, preferably in medical devices.
  • Experience with IEC 60601-1/2-2/18 preferred.
  • Experience with analog circuits and microcontroller hardware/software preferred.
  • Travel less than 10%.

Responsibilities

  • Design, prototype, and develop digital electronics within Smith+ Nephew medical products.
  • Create/review schematics; component selection; ensure inter-board interoperability.
  • Collaborate with FPGA and SW designers; support connectivity and functionality.
  • Bring-up prototype boards; develop test protocols and fixtures; document results.
  • Provide technical support to other groups and assist with product commercialization.
  • Coordinate electrical safety and EMC certification testing.
  • Perform design controls to ensure FDA/ISO compliance.
  • Maintain Design History Files and write specifications and test documents.

Smith+ Nephew’s Arthroscopic Enabling Technologies division is working on the development of the next generation of medical devices to enable surgeons to perform minimally invasive surgery. As we grow, we are seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer, who will be a solid contributor to the development of medical device hardware, encompassing digital image acquisition and processing, computer vision, and video streaming. This is an exciting career opportunity for a high potential engineer interested in advancing their career through the design and development of sophisticated, high-speed digital electronics for medical applications.

What will you be doing?
  • Design, prototype, and develop digital electronics design within Smith+ Nephew medical products:
    • Perform tasks related to high speed, multilayer, board design.
      • Create and review schematics.
      • Own components selection based on given requirements.
      • Incorporate interoperability between boards based on electrical system architecture
      • Support electrical component library management
    • Collaboration:
      • Work with FPGA and SW designers to support FPGA and on-board Processor connectivity and functionality.
      • Conduct technical design reviews as needed.
    • Test/debug:
      • Bring-up of prototype circuit boards.
      • Develop of test protocols and fixtures.
      • Document results of testing and failure analysis
  • Participate in technical support to other groups as required to bring a product successfully through commercialization. Help maintain existing products and support Smith+ Nephew vendor technical questions.
  • Coordinate and support electrical safety (IEC/UL 60601-1, IEC 60601-2-2, IEC 60601-2-18) and EMC (IEC60601-1-2) certification testing.
  • Perform design control functions to ensure compliance with FDA, ISO, and other regulatory bodies.
  • Participate in ownership of Design History Files, writing specifications and test documents (protocols/report) as needed.
What will you need to be successful?
  • Minimum BSc in Electrical or Computer Engineering
  • 5+ years of experience in high-speed board design, leveraging good analytical and problem-solving skills. This includes experience in taking at least two products from inception to launch.
  • Experience working in a cross-functional team of electrical, software, systems, and mechanical engineers
  • Proven experience in hands on trouble shooting, problem solving and critical thinking (making logical decisions based on data collected).
  • Proven experience in using lab equipment and debugging tools such as oscilloscope, logic analyzer and multimeters.
  • Experience with design controls, preferably in the medical device industry.
  • Experience in IEC 60601-1, IEC 60601-1-2, IC 60601-2-18, and IEC 60601-2-2 is preferred
  • Experience with Analog circuits and microcontroller hardware and software is preferred
  • Experience in a work environment with rapid growth and quick scope changes is desired.

The anticipated base compensation range for this position is $96,500- $167,500 USD annually. The actual base pay offered to the successful candidate will be based on multiple factors, including but not limited to job-related knowledge/skills, experience, geographical location. It is not typical for an individual to be hired at the high end of the range for their role at Smith + Nephew. Compensation decisions are dependent upon the facts and circumstances of each position and candidate.
