Job summary

Burns & McDonnell in Chicago seeks a Senior Electrical Designer to lead planning, design, and construction documentation for a diverse portfolio of projects. You will supervise electrical schematics, grid layouts, lighting and power systems, and ensure compliance with company, client, and project standards.

This role requires expertise in AutoCAD, MicroStation, and Excel, with strong 2D and 3D drafting, advanced design calculations, and ability to mentor staff while coordinating with engineers

Qualifications

  • Bachelor/Associate degree with extensive related experience (13–15 years) is required.
  • Expert in AutoCAD, MicroStation and Excel for design deliverables.
  • Strong communication and analytical skills are essential.

Description

A Senior Electrical Designer will lead various phases of planning, site evaluations, analytical designs, design documents for prospoals, report preparation, specifications, and preparation of construction documentation and electrical plans as part of a project team. This position will lead various projects with a diverse portfolio of project types and clients.

  • Lead various electrical project designs including electrical schematics, grid plan layouts, electrical power systems, lighting systems, protection and controls, and site and facility design. Follow all company, client and project design and drafting standards.

  • Lead drawing, planning, development and production work including problem analysis, design layout and calculations on non-routine assignments of substantial variety and complexity.

  • Lead a variety of assignments using prescribed methods and standard techniques including drawing sequence and presentation, sizing various system components and refining rough sketches.

  • Lead the evaluation of designs or sketches and redlines or mark-ups on ongoing projects for quality assurance.

  • Approve reports, drawings, and tests to plan and lead design projects to meet deliverables.

  • Approve design codes and specifications related to design requirements.

  • Lead production of design drawings within scope, budget and schedule. Perform project tasks and assignments within budgeted hours and deadlines.

  • Compute volume calculations for conduit/grounding layouts, equipment and panel wiring diagrams, and relay panel schematics under the direction of the engineer.

  • Incorporate schedules, budgets and project criteria into electrical design and layouts for project financial goals.

  • Responsible for the quality review of all revisions of project drawings, plot files and project-related information in a logical and well-structured manner.

  • Train, mentor, and develop less experienced drafting, detailing and design staff members.

  • Participate in marketing and possible client development meetings.

  • Responsible for the electrical design QA/QC process.

  • Performs other duties as assigned

Qualifications
  • Bachelor Degree in drafting technology or related field and 13 years related experience required or,

  • Associate Degree and 14 years related experience required or,

  • 15 years progressive detailing and design experience required

  • Expert understanding of design software such as: AutoCAD, MicroStation, and Excel to develop the design deliverables. Ability to learn and effectively utilize new design software programs.

  • Expert ability to utilize 2D and 3D applications to prepare engineering drawings.

  • Expert knowledge in design, calculations and design systems.

  • Expert knowledge in the theory and practices of assigned discipline; competent in the fundamental concepts of other disciplines as they relate to the assigned discipline; and capable of operating related discipline design software necessary to execute production tasks.

  • Work collaboratively with others including, but not limited to clients (Project Managers, Engineers and Designers) in a multi-discipline project team environment to resolve design or drawing issues as appropriate and to accomplish objectives.

  • Excellent written & verbal communication skills.

  • Excellent analytical and problem solving skills, and attention to detail.

Compensation

$145,000.00-195,000.00 Yearly

The expected compensation range for this position is displayed in compliance with all local/state regulations. The expected compensation range for this position is based on a number of factors, including but not limited to: individual education, qualifications, prior work experience and work location. The total annual compensation package will consist of a base salary and eligibility to participate in our discretionary year-end incentive bonus program.
