ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY
Parkhurst Talent Group has been retained to identify a Senior Director of Operations for our client, a private-equity-backed infrastructure services company that provides inspection, assessment, and life-extension services to electric and telecommunications utilities across the United States. The company operates nationally, has a long-tenured customer base, and is investing in its field organization to support continued growth.
This is a senior field leadership role. You will own a West Coast territory end to end, with full accountability for safety, quality, productivity, revenue, and profitability, and you will build and develop the territory management team that delivers the work. The role reports to the Senior Vice President of Operations and is a visible seat with direct exposure to executive leadership.
This is a home-based position anywhere on the West Coast. We prefer candidates in the Portland, Oregon area, but will consider candidates in Washington and California. The job includes regular overnight travel throughout the territory.
WHAT YOU WILL OWN
- Lead the field operations teams that perform the company's services across the territory, completing available work on or ahead of schedule, safely, and at expected quality and productivity levels.
- Carry full accountability for territory safety, quality, productivity, cost control, and profit performance, and know the key metrics for every project.
- Build, evaluate, and develop the territory management team so that it can oversee, execute, and deliver quality services safely and profitably for assigned customers.
- Serve on the company's Central Safety Committee and cultivate the field organization's safety culture, with a standing objective of improving safety performance year over year.
- Partner closely with business development on key customer relationships and growth initiatives, and promote teamwork across operations support, workforce development, contracts, and finance.
- Work with the SVP, Human Resources, and workforce development to define and implement training programs for the line management team.
- Use the company's performance systems to monitor and measure results on a job, customer, profit-center, and company basis, and act on what the data shows.
- Lead monthly, quarterly, and annual production-capacity planning, sizing the organization to the work and meeting retention and attrition goals.
- Evaluate outside production-capacity options when additional capacity or unique contract requirements call for them.
- Communicate plans and progress clearly to senior leadership and to territory and project management teams so the organization moves with one vision.
- Support special projects that improve sales and profit growth, and contribute wherever it helps reduce bureaucracy and achieve the company's financial objectives.
WHAT SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE
- A territory that hits its revenue and margin plan with a measurable improvement in safety statistics.
- A management bench that is stronger, more tenured, and more self-sufficient than the one you inherited.
- Customers who see work delivered on time, to spec, and without surprises.
- An executive team that trusts your numbers and your read on the field.
WHAT YOU BRING
- Ten or more years of progressive operations and management experience, with at least five years leading multi-crew, multi-site field operations.
- Experience in utility services, telecommunications infrastructure, construction services, or another outsourced field-services environment is strongly preferred. We will consider exceptional leaders from adjacent B2B services businesses.
- Demonstrated P&L ownership and the ability to manage safety, quality, productivity, and cost together rather than one at the expense of the others.
- A track record of building and developing management teams and holding them accountable to results.
- Strong analytical skills, including the ability to read and interpret financial reports, technical information, and contract documents, and to present clearly to senior leadership.
- Composure under pressure, respect for people at every level of the organization, and the presence to lead crews in the field and executives in the boardroom.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
- A bachelor's degree is preferred; an equivalent combination of education and operational leadership experience will be considered.
- Willingness to travel overnight throughout the territory and to work varied hours when the work requires it.
