Job summary

Optum Life Sciences is seeking a Senior Director of Epidemiology to lead its Epidemiology function and advance scientific excellence, real-world evidence generation, and client impact across pharmaceutical, biotechnology, government, and healthcare sectors.

The role balances external scientific leadership with internal team management, study oversight, and governance, guiding ~6-8 direct reports within a 75-80 person organization. Remote work is supported nationwide in the U.S.

Qualifications

• Master's degree or higher in Epidemiology, Public Health, Biostatistics, Medicine, Health Services Research, or a related scientific discipline.
• 10+ years of professional epidemiology experience.
• Experience leading managers and multi-level organizations.
• Experience serving as a scientific advisor or client-facing scientific leader.
• Experience providing scientific oversight for complex epidemiology studies.
• Experience working with claims, EHR, registry, or other real-world data sources.
• Willingness to travel 20-30%.

Responsibilities

• Provide strategic leadership across epidemiology, pharmacoepidemiology, real-world evidence and related research initiatives.
• Ensure scientific rigor throughout study design, analysis, and client deliverables.
• Provide senior scientific oversight for teams executing epidemiology studies and client engagements.
• Review outputs, address quality concerns, resolve escalations, ensure study execution meets expectations.
• Serve as a scientific authority on use of real-world data sources.
• Guide assessment of outcomes, safety, and benefit-risk using epidemiologic methods.
• Advance evidence-generation methodologies and best practices.
• Strengthen external visibility through publications and industry engagement.
• Lead and develop epidemiologists and leaders within a large organization.
• Coach managers and senior professionals while developing future leaders.
