Job summary

Hims & Hers is seeking a Sr. Director of Machine Learning to lead the teams building AI services at the core of the user experience.

You will own the applied side of our AI portfolio, including LLM-powered clinical intake, provider support, personalization, and operational workflows. This leadership role focuses on turning foundation models into dependable production services, growing a team, and partnering with ML platform and evaluation groups to ensure measurable, safe, and continuously

Qualifications

• 14+ years in machine learning and software engineering.
• 8+ years leading ML teams and managing managers/senior tech leads.
• Shipping ML-powered products to production at scale with operational ownership.
• Deep learning experience in recommendations, ranking, classification, or sequence models.
• Strong software architecture judgment for service boundaries and data flow.
• Balancing model quality with latency, cost, and complexity.
• Comfort with ambiguity and turning big problems into shipped systems.
• Excellent communication with executives and clinical stakeholders.
• Bonus: healthcare or regulated domain experience.
• Bonus: clinical decision support or ML with human-in-the-loop.

Responsibilities

• Lead and grow ML engineers, applied scientists, and ML production engineers building AI services end to end.
• Own the strategy for frontier LLMs: prompt design, retrieval, tool calls, and reliable outputs.
• Design harnesses around LLM calls including validation and guardrails for auditable outputs.
• Develop in-house deep learning and classical ML models for clinical and recommendation use cases.
• Set production standards: SLOs for accuracy, latency, cost and ownership.
• Make build-vs-fine-tune-vs-prompt decisions as capabilities evolve.
• Partner with Clinical/Medical Affairs to ensure appropriate oversight and safety.
• Collaborate with ML infrastructure and evaluation teams on metrics and feedback loops.
• Work with Product/Data/Engineering/Security/Legal to translate problems into ML initiatives.
• Build hiring, mentoring, and leadership practices for the team.
