Job description

# Senior DevOps EngineerApply for this jobLocationRemote , NYDepartmentEngineeringJob TypeFull-TimeCompensation$130,000 - $170,000 per year (USD)# Senior DevOps Engineer****Salary range:**** $130k-$170k, plus equity options****Location:**** Fully remote (US). We already have strong team presence and momentum in Indianapolis, Charlotte, and Pittsburgh, and while we welcome applicants from anywhere, we're especially excited to grow our talent density in those three markets.****Reports to:**** Head of Engineering****What’s driving this hire:**** As we scale, we need dedicated expertise in infrastructure and operations. Your success is measured in incidents that don't happen, alerts that are quiet because the system is healthy, deploys that are boring, and engineers who get to focus on building because the platform underneath them just works.## What you'll do* ****Own our infrastructure and make it reproducible.**** Bring infrastructure-as-code discipline to our AWS and Heroku footprint. Reduce the number of things that exist only as tribal knowledge or manual console steps.* ****Build the observability layer.**** Finish and mature our observability tools: meaningful dashboards, actionable alerting with low false-positive noise, and tracing that lets us find the root cause of a customer-reported issue in minutes.* ****Tame background processing.**** Give us proper visibility and self-service control over our job queues — the ability to see, retry, and clear stuck jobs from a UI instead of a console, plus the queue architecture changes that stop one slow integration from starving everything else.* ****Harden our security posture.**** Lead concrete infrastructure security improvements: secrets management, access controls, audit logging, dependency and vulnerability management. Partner with our engineers to turn enterprise security questionnaires from a multi-day slog into a routine task, and lay the groundwork for SOC 2.* ****Answer security and infrastructure questions**** from clients and prospective clients as needed.* ****Own database operations.**** Manage our Aurora MySQL fleet — upgrades, performance, backups, read replicas, and the read-only/PII-free schemas we use to safely expose data to internal tooling and AI workflows.* ****Make CI/CD boring and fast.**** Improve build times and reliability, strengthen our review-app and staging environments so QA can test against realistic data, and keep deploys safe and reversible.* ****Improve reliability and incident response.**** Work with our team to establish lightweight runbooks, on-call practices, and post-incident reviews appropriate to our size. Help us measure and improve uptime for venues that run live every night.* ****Keep an eye on cost.**** Right-size our infrastructure spend as we scale, without compromising reliability.* ****Pitch in.**** We're small. You'll occasionally touch application code (Ruby on Rails), help debug a gnarly customer issue, and share in the support rotation and occasional off-hours maintenance & issue resolution. We want a builder who's hands-on, not a purely strategic architect.## Your first 90 days might look like* ****Month 1:**** Learn the system end-to-end, take a few customer-support shifts to see where the operational pain actually is, and ship one quick win, such as tooling to help our client success department address issues themselves without escalating.* ****Month 2:**** Stand up a coherent alerting and dashboards baseline, and take ownership of an infrastructure upgrade or a CI reliability project.* ****Month 3:**** Deliver a concrete security-hardening milestone (audit logging, for example) that materially improves how we answer enterprise security questionnaires.## What we're looking for* 5+ years in DevOps / SRE / platform / infrastructure roles, with ownership of production systems serving live customers.* Deep, hands-on experience with AWS (we use Aurora MySQL, S3, and more) and with a PaaS deployment model (we use Heroku today).* Strong with CI/CD pipelines (we use CircleCI).* Solid observability chops. You've built monitoring/alerting/tracing that people trust.* Database operations experience: upgrades, performance tuning, backups, replication. MySQL/Aurora experience preferred.* Refined security instincts: secrets management, access control, vulnerability management, and the practical judgment to know which battles matter at a startup our size. Experience with SOC 2 is a strong plus.* Comfortable in and around an application and its background-job system, or a willingness to learn. You don't need to be a Rails expert, but you can't be allergic to reading and writing application code.* Excellent written communication and the temperament to work autonomously on a small team with very little hand-holding. You take a vague problem and turn it into a plan.* A bias toward eliminating toil. When you do something manually twice, you want to automate it the third time.## Nice to have* Experience with infrastructure-as-code (Terraform or similar).* Experience migrating workloads (e.g., off a PaaS to containerized/managed infrastructure) without downtime.* Background supporting B2B SaaS with lots of third-party integrations (hospitality property management systems, messaging/Twilio, payments).* Hospitality, point-of-sale, or device-fleet (mobile/kiosk) experience.* Experience standing up SOC 2 Type II at a small company.## What this role is notWe're a small, hands-on team. This is not a role where you'll architect from a whiteboard and hand specs to others to implement. You'll build it yourself. It's also not a role where security means writing aspirational policy documents; here it means shipping the controls. If you want a large platform org with deep specialization, this isn't the fit. If you want to single-handedly stand up real infrastructure discipline at a company that will feel the difference immediately, it is.## What It’s Like to Work On Our Engineering Team* You’ll share real ownership of meaningful systems. You won’t just work tickets.* Your ideas will help shape the product and technical direction.* We’ve built a team that people want to stay on. The engineering team has had zero departures in five years.* We encourage thoughtful experimentation with new tools and technologies that can improve performance, reliability, or developer happiness.* We value pragmatic engineering over over-engineering.# What it’s like to work at ChexologyChexology is a global technology company headquartered in New York City. You may have seen us on ABC’s Shark Tank, where we introduced our patented software, transforming the hospitality industry by eliminating paper claim tickets—think coat check, luggage check, equipment rentals, and valet services. Our software powers operations for iconic brands like the Museum of Modern Art, Barclays Center, Live Nation, Tao Group, and Montage International. At Chexology, we combine our creativity and curiosity every day to build tech that enhances guest experiences worldwide.## Benefits* Medical, dental, and vision insurance with a $400 monthly employer contribution.* 401(k) plan to support your long-term financial goals.* Flexible PTO policy, plus holiday office closures, to recharge.* Company-provided laptop and tools to help you do your best work.* Enjoy virtual game days, seasonal get-togethers, and company gatherings that bring the team together to connect, unwind, and celebrate wins.## Equal Opportunity EmployerWe believe diversity and inclusion mean tech leadership and teams should reflect the diversity of the United States.
