Job summary

Harvard Medical School's Department of Information Technology seeks a Senior DevOps Engineer to manage secure SRCE (FISMA-certified AWS) environments, enabling groundbreaking biomedical research. You will oversee deployment, monitoring, patching, and compliance, ensuring confidentiality and availability while supporting researchers and developers across the stack.

You will apply best-practice cloud security controls, contribute to cost-saving refinements, and collaborate with IT and research

Qualifications

  • Minimum of five years' post-secondary education or relevant work experience.
  • Knowledge of IT applications, processes, software and equipment.
  • Cloud security controls, principles and best practices.
  • Experience with AWS technologies (IAM, EC2, S3, RDS, etc.).
  • Experience with legal/regulatory standards (PCI, FedRAMP, HIPAA, GDPR).
  • Experience with healthcare systems and HIPAA-regulated environments preferred.

Job Description

The Harvard Medical School Department of Information Technology is seeking a talented Senior DevOps Engineer with a strong background focused on managing environments that must meet federal security standards. The Senior DevOps Engineer will be responsible for secure research computing environments (SRCE), a FISMA-certified AWS cloud infrastructure environment, enabling the groundbreaking biomedical research of some of the world's foremost scientific investigators.

Core Duties
  • Oversee operational activities of the SRCE – deployment, monitoring, reporting, patching, and compliance, in partnership with HMS infrastructure and research computing teams
  • Utilize best-practice cloud security designs to ensure the confidentiality, integrity and availability of the secure environment
  • Manage a continuous integration and deployment methodology for AWS-based technologies
  • Manage full application stacks from the OS through custom research applications using AWS
  • Provide high-level support on technical computing issues to end users and developers
  • Document complex technology, data protection, confidentiality, and data residency solutions
  • Play a key role in the planning, implementation and growth of the SRCE
  • Drive continuous improvement of the SRCE through process, architecture, and cost-saving refinements
  • Participate fully in software development life cycle
  • Research, design, and implement technical solutions to deliver business requirements
  • Identify opportunities to improve and simplify applications portfolio and implement related enhancements
  • Contribute to creation and maturing of software development best practices and new technologies
  • Draw on relationship and technical skills to act as technical liaison to internal and external clients and to mentor junior staff
  • Abide by and follow the Harvard University IT technical standards, policies and Code of Conduct
  • Participate in off-hours on-call rotation
Qualifications
Basic Qualifications
  • Minimum of five years' post-secondary education or relevant work experience
Additional Qualifications and Skills
  • Knowledge of information technology applications, processes, software and equipment
  • Highly specialized knowledge of a specific technology
  • Demonstrated team performance skills, service mindset approach, and the ability to act as a trusted advisor
  • Critical to this position is the ability to work independently and to make decisions at the appropriate time, taking into account the needs of the situation, priorities, constraints and the availability of necessary information all in support of the core research computing mission.
  • A strong conceptual and practical understanding of cloud security controls, principles and best practices
  • Experience and understanding of legal and regulatory standards (PCI, FedRAMP, CCPA, GDPR, etc.) as they pertain to a secure computing environment
  • 2+ years of experience in healthcare systems and authorities operations, such as FISMA, FedRAMP or HIPPA-regulated environment architecture/designs
  • Experience with AWS technologies which may include IAM, EC2, EBS, ELB, RDS, RedShift, S3, Glacier, Route 53, Gateways, VPCs, CloudWatch, Lambda scripts, CloudFormation, VDI, Appstream 2.0, Control Tower, Service Catalog
  • Amazon Web Services (AWS) certification preferred
  • Experience supporting large-scale enterprise IT cloud projects
  • Hands-on experience with distributed resource management and virtualization technologies
  • Experience communicating technical issues to executive level audiences
  • Experience with the following technologies is a plus:
  • Puppet / Foreman / Terraform / Jenkins
  • Containerization technologies: Docker, Singularity, Kubernetes, Amazon ECS
  • Open-source databases: MySQL/Mariadb, Postgres
  • Scripting languages, such as Bash and Python
  • GitHub and git workflows
  • AWS Service Work Bench
  • Qualys, Checkmarx
  • Splunk
Certificates and Licenses
  • Completion of Harvard IT Academy specified foundational courses (or external equivalent) preferred

Work Format Details

This position has been determined by school or unit leaders that some of the duties and responsibilities can be effectively performed at a non-Harvard location. The work schedule and location will be set by the department at its discretion and based upon operational needs. When not working at a Harvard or Harvard-designated location, employees in hybrid positions must work in a Harvard registered state in compliance with the University's Policy on Employment Outside of Massachusetts. Additional details will be discussed during the interview process. Certain visa types and funding sources may limit work location.
