Job description

Instrument is a design and technology company. We build brands, products, and experiences that move businesses forward—by making the complex simple.

For over 20 years, we’ve partnered with companies like Google, ServiceNow, Uber, Eventbrite, and ŌURA, helping them navigate change, launch new ideas, and grow with intention.

Our work spans Brand, Marketing, and Product, but what defines us is how we work. We bring strategy, design, and engineering together from the start, moving quickly from idea to execution and refining as we go. We aim to do great work and be great to work with, because both matter.

We’re a collaborative, hands‑on team with roots in Portland and New York and a distributed presence across the U.S. and Europe. We build teams around the needs of the work, staying nimble without sacrificing craft.

We value curiosity, perspective, and continuous learning, and we’re committed to building an inclusive environment where people can do their best work.

If that sounds like you, we’d love to meet you.

Senior Developers at Instrument are experienced creative technologists at their core who translate complex ideas into robust, scalable technical solutions. They operate with high autonomy, balancing detailed execution with system‑level thinking and strong cross‑disciplinary collaboration.

Senior Developers are trusted contributors who elevate technical quality, mentor others, and help shape how technology supports creative and strategic intent.

What You’ll Do
  • Lead development of complex features and interfaces across projects.
  • Architect and implement scalable front‑end solutions within broader systems.
  • Balance performance, accessibility, and maintainability in technical decisions.
  • Identify and address technical risks early in the process.
  • Partner closely with design, strategy, production, and back‑end teams.
  • Communicate technical rationale and tradeoffs to varied audiences.
  • Support alignment between creative intent and technical execution.
  • Own the quality and integrity of development deliverables within workstreams.
  • Improve workflows, tooling, and documentation to support team efficiency.
  • Review code and provide constructive feedback to peers.
  • Support the growth of more junior developers through feedback and guidance.
  • Share knowledge, patterns, and best practices across teams.
  • Model strong collaboration, accountability, and craft excellence.
  • Practices Creative Intelligence by staying curious about emerging tools and technologies (including AI) and applying sound judgment about when and how they should inform the work. Continuously learns and experiments while keeping human needs, craft, and responsibility at the center.
  • This role may take on related responsibilities as needs evolve, aligned to the role’s level and core purpose.
What You’ll Bring
  • 3-5 years of experience in front‑end/Full‑Stack development (leadership experience a plus)
  • Advanced proficiency in modern front‑end frameworks and tooling.
  • Strong understanding of APIs, data integration, and system architecture.
  • Confident use of version control, CI/CD pipelines, and collaboration tools.
  • Evaluates AI‑assisted tools for workflow improvement; experiments with them independently and shares findings with the team.
  • Passion for leading‑edge technology and proven track record researching and implementing new tech effectively
  • The ability to seamlessly integrate with back‑end developers, APIs, dynamic content and templating
  • Strong understanding of high fidelity design and animation, with the ability to create visually stunning, interactive experiences that are both engaging and accessible.
  • Fluency in HTML/CSS/JavaScript, both with and without frameworks
  • Experience (or interest) in developing for accessibility and making digital products usable and accessible for everyone
  • Collaboration, flexibility, hustle, humility, confidence
