Job summary

Belden Inc. in Syracuse, NY is seeking a Senior Design Engineer to design new products and implement cost reductions for existing products.

The role reports to the Director of Fiber Cable & Connectivity Development and is on-site in Syracuse with potential for hybrid/remote work where feasible. You will develop next-generation optical connectivity solutions for broadband networks, collaborate across Sales, Product Mgmt, and Global Manufacturing, and lead cost-optimization for fiber optic cables

Qualifications

• Bachelor's in Mechanical or Electrical Eng with 5+ years design experience in mech/electro-mechanical fields.
• Experience with fiber optic cable, connectors, cable assemblies, enclosures and interconnect products.
• Knowledge of high-speed manufacturing equipment including automated assembly machines, screw machines and CNC.
• Proficiency in SolidWorks or other 3D CAD platforms.
• Strong organizational skills with ability to juggle multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

• Develop next-generation optical connectivity solutions for broadband networks meeting market and margin goals.
• Collaborate with Sales, Product Management, and Global Manufacturing to evaluate design trade-offs and resolve complex requirements.
• Lead design, value engineering, and cost-optimization of fiber optic cables, connectors, and PON components to reduce costs while ensuring performance and compliance.
• Advance connector technology from concept through validation, qualification, and commercialization.
• Define environmental and mechanical qualification testing to meet customer/industry standards.
• Build market knowledge of trends, applications, and competitive products.
• Mentor junior and mid-level engineers and serve as engineering contact for Product Management, QA, and Tier-1 service providers.

Job Summary:

PPC a Belden Brand is currently seeking a Senior Design Engineer. This will be responsible for the design of new products and implementing cost reductions to existing products. This position reports to the Director of Fiber Cable & Connectivity Development and on-site in Syracuse.

You will make a difference in the following ways:

• Develop next-generation optical connectivity solutions for broadband networks that meet market and company margin goals.
• Cross-Functional Collaboration: Serve as the technical expert cooperating with Sales, Product Management, and Global Manufacturing teams to evaluate design trade-offs, troubleshoot production failures, and resolve complex customer requirements
• Drive market competitiveness by leading the design, value engineering, and cost-optimization of next-generation fiber optic cables, connectors, and passive optical network (PON) components, significantly reducing costs while maintaining strict optical performance and compliance standards
• Interconnect Development: Advance connector tech by executing projects from initial concept through design validation, qualification, and commercialization.
• Define environmental and mechanical qualification testing to ensure compliance with customer and industry standards
• Develop market knowledge and skill set to stay current with market trends, product application and competitive products.
• Mentorship & Collaboration: Provide technical mentorship to junior and mid-level engineers. Act as the primary engineering point of contact for Product Management, Quality Assurance, and Tier-1 broadband service providers

What you will bring:

• Education & Experience: Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering with five (5) years of design experience in a Mechanical or Electromechanical field
• Experience with fiber optic cable, connectors, cable assemblies, enclosures and interconnect products
• Knowledge of high speed manufacturing equipment and capability such as automated assembly machines, screw machine and CNC
• Proficiency in SolidWorks or other 3D CAD Platforms
• Well-developed organization skills, including the ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment while upholding quality standards

Applicants can expect a base compensation range of $105,000 to $140,000 plus benefits and additional incentives based on the level of the role.
